It's not. It's where horror and art collide. Seriously--the last shot lingers. Just watch it and judge for yourself.

One wonders if MovieBuff holds the same disinterest in the equally-classic Halloween.

Umberto D: Obviously a classic of neo-realism, Bicycle Thieves is certainly the bigger classic but this one has a ton going for it to. ****
The Elephant Man: Been a while since I've seen it, if the Blu-ray ever comes out I'll definitely buy it and re-watch. Definitely remember it being really good both as filmmaking and as accessible storytelling. ****
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: I acknowledge it as an important entry in its genre and think certain moments are very effective. It's a good movie but I don't really find it scary at all and parts of it feel a little clumsy. ***1/2

1. Overrated, incredibly shallow 80s fluff.
2. Fun. Stupid fun.
3. Great film.

First things first:
Old Set
1. Umberto D: Really emotional and well-crafted neorealist film from a master. I don't think it quite blew me away, but I might just need more time, or may Italian neorealism doesn't hit me like it does others, but this is still great filmmaking that any filmbuff needs to see. A-
2. The Elephant Man: I think this is a lot more flawed than people realize. The script has some of the typical sentimental biopic moments and Lynch adds some weird touches which feel off. I also think the film adds interesting details but then doesn't follow through. Still, there are some great scenes and the performances are excellent. B
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The filmmaking has some problems, particularly in the first half, but as an experience of horror, this is pretty intense and effective. A-
New Set
1. The Breakfast Club: It's got some sappy and dated elements, but I can't deny that this film still moves me. A-
2. Independence Day: Stupid, very stupid. Still, I do like some of the effects and the pairing of Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith is fun. C
3. The Royal Tenenbaums: Hilarious, heartfelt, moving, and very well-crafted. Wes Anderson's masterpiece. A+

1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind: A masterpiece of science-fiction. The last fifteen minutes is one of my favourite film climaxes ever. Also might be by favourite John Williams score. A+
2. Goldfinger: Awesome Bond movie with great action and lots of humour. But is also has a pseudo rape scene that drives me crazy. A-
3. I, Robot: It's a fun movie, but it feels too hip for it's own good. I'd like to read the Asimov novel. B

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Possibly Spielberg's masterpiece. If more blockbusters followed its example instead of Star Wars' example the state of Hollywood cinema would probably be better off. ****
Goldfinger: For better or worse, the Bond movie that really drove the franchise in a particular direction. Just a really fun little action movie with a lot of cool ideas. ***1/2
I, Robot: I've never read Isaac Asimov's novel, but I still felt pissed off on his behalf that his science fiction classic had been adapted into such a lame mediocrity. Also has the most embarrassing instance of product placement in film history. **1/2

Close Encounters - Awesome.
Goldfinger - Not sure why this is the bond people love.
I Robot - Um, neat I guess? All i remember is Will Smith really liking his air of runners.

2. Goldfinger - I haven't seen that.
3. I, Robot - One of my favorites of 2004.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - A
Still a stellar piece of science-fiction.
Goldfinger - B
A lot of fun. Easily my favorite Bond.
I, Robot - F
Just terrible. Bad acting, awful narrative--just not a good movie at all.

This is how you do an alien encounter movie.
Dapper gent kills bad guys and gets the girl.
Will Smith charms and yells and nimble robots try to kill us but too bad so sad we got Will Smith.

1. Cape Fear - N/A
2. Darkman - B+
An awesome, pulpy tale. I've been a big fan of this movie for quite some time.
3. Superman Returns - B
I might be the only person on earth who likes this. It's not great, but it's a serviceable entry.
