Anchorman is fine, it has some really funny moments. I don't worship at its altar like some people did in college but it's better than the average Will Ferrell fare.
Predator is great, second only to T2 in the Schwarzenegger pantheon.
The Game is a fun movie, not great but it's a good watch.

Anchorman - C-
I haven't seen it in awhile. It was okay in the theater, most of my friends in high school seemed to like it. Then again, that isn't saying very much. It's usually lumped into the pile of "bro-comedy", along with Family Guy.
Predator - B
There are several memorable set pieces, that's about it. I really dug the look of the Predator, too.
The Game - D
That ending...is so incredibly bad. Was there nothing else? Anything would have been better. "He's been dead the whole time" would've been preferable. Even as a mediocre movie, the ending killed whatever aspirations it had.

Can we offer our own movies to put through the ringer? Sure, that's fine with me. But I'll go ahead and put up a new, Halloween-themed set in the meantime.
1. The Exorcist
2. The Shining
3. The Sixth Sense

I made the giant mistake of watching this movie as a kid and I've never bothered to re-watch it. Your braveness in watching the movie recently inspired me to re-watch it next October. It should be an interesting experience. Fans of the book hate it and I totally understand. But... I've never read it, so, I don't really care if the movie is faithful or not. I think it's one of Stanley Kubrick's greatest movies and a true classic. I'm probably the only person who didn't give a shit about this movie in 1999. I didn't "get" the hype. It was fucking obvious that Bruce Willis is a ghost. The movie literally begins with him getting shot by Donny Wahlberg. Plus, I was so tired of "twist endings" by that point. The Usual Suspects. Se7en. Scream 1 & 2. Primal Fear. The Game. Fight Club. The list goes on and on. It was just too much. And then M. Night has to make it even MORE popular. Honestly. I really, really hated this movie in 1999. I should probably re-watch it since my hatred for it is gone. Maybe I'll do an M. Night retrospective next October.

The Exorcist
I never really found it overly scary but it is an exceptionally well crafted movie with an incredible atmosphere and good performances. ****
The Shining
A classic, no complaints, probably the best horror film ever made. ****
The Sixth Sense
A very well made movie with a nicely understated style, two great performances, and a well drawn out central relationship. There is certainly plenty to like about the movie beyond the ending, but that doesn't change the fact that the ending is very effective. That said, the film's incredible box office supremacy, Best Picture nomination, and pacement on the AFI 10th Anniversary list are baffling to me. It's definitely not that good. ***1/2

Three of those don't even have twist endings. What are you talking about? The head in the box. Two killers instead of one. The fact that it WAS a game. All just the movies playing out. The head in the box is just one more step in a serial killer's elaborate plot that's been carried out, did anyone not think he had something up his sleeve as they watched him lead the detectives out into that wheat field? Scream is a mystery, the two killers is the solution to said mystery, not some shocking twist that redefines everything you were watching. And of course The Game was a game. Since when is it a twist that something turns out to be exactly what it said it was going to be?

All just the movies playing out. I'll give you The Game, but I disagree about Se7en and Scream. I saw both movies when they were released and they both caught people off-guard and defined those movies. NO ONE expected the head in the box. "What's in the box? What's in the box? What's in the box?" There's a reason why that line became infamous in the mid-90's. Se7en, let's be honest, was a VERY typical serial killer movie until Kevin Spacey showed up. Once his character made its proper debut, it took that movie to a completely different place, and that head in the box sealed the deal. You probably watched Se7en after Fight Club and were already a David Fincher fan and probably knew some details about it. But for those of us who saw it in 1995 when Fincher was a nobody and Kevin Spacey was a nobody and you didn't know what to expect, that whole ending took everyone by surprise. Se7en made careers. Let's put it that way. As for Scream, that whole ending with the two killers giving their speech was ridiculously over-the-top. It changed the whole tone of the movie. Most of Scream was a fine line between horror and comedy, but that ending kicked horror to the curb and went full comedy. No one expected that movie to end that way. It's a major reason why Scream became an unlikely Christmas hit. Seriously. Scream was released on fucking Christmas and no one in their right mind would go see a slasher film on Christmas but there was this whole buzz of, "is this EVEN a horror movie?" I remember having that debate at the time and it was all because of the ending.

I remember having that debate at the time and it was all because of the ending. "What's in the box" became famous because of the rather strange way Brad Pitt delivered the line. And no, I did not see the film after I saw Fight Club and no I did not have it spoiled. Look, the rest of these endings completely redefined the rest of the films. The Fight Club ending made you go back to every scene and see how everything in it could have been done by one person and try to figure out which persona is "in control" at any given point. The Usual Suspects ending made you completely reconsider everything you've seen up to that point and made you wonder if any of it was real. What did the ending of Seven reveal? That the killer is played by a famous person? That the killer had an elaborate plan? We already knew that. As for Scream, I mean there's a difference between a famous ending and a twist ending. Yeah, the two killers might not have been exactly 100% what you were expecting, but you knew that the solution to who the killer was was never going to be what you 100% expected.

Three great movies, all expertly made.
I'll get stick for this but The Sixth Sense is actually my favourite out of all of them.
I remember visiting New York for the first time with college in October, 1999 and it was showing at a cinema our whole group went to. It was that, 'Three Kings' or 'Bats'. I was firmly championing 'Three Kings' but I was outvoted and we all went to see this Bruce Willis movie that none of us had even heard of.
Maybe I'd have predicted the twist if I'd seen it at a later date but my 16-year old self had no idea what was going to happen and was duly blown away by it.
I haven't watched it for a long time but, due to the time and place in which I first experienced it, it will always be a very special film to me.
I saw The Exorcist when it was re-released in the late 90s for the first time since it was banned the 70s. Honestly, my friend and I laughed way more than we gasped. As an adult, however, I can now appreciate the filmmaking that went in to it. It's far from scary, though.
The Shining is a stone-cold classic, though the woman will always annoy me immensely. Fortunately, Nicholson is in his element and manages to wash away any negative aspects with little more than an evil grin.
Never read the book, never will.

The Exorcist: Exceptionally well-crafted with some of the most iconic moments in horror history. It's pretty awesome. A+
The Shining: One of the top three horror films of all time in my opinion. Love the way it goes against typical horror tropes by being set in a well-lit and opulent hotel instead of somewhere dark and dreary. Nicholson gives one of his best performances and Kubrick's masterful control is felt throughout. A+
Sixth Sense: It's been a while and I wouldn't feel comfortable giving it a letter grade. I remember liking it when I saw it, and not just for the twist ending (I'm pretty sure I knew it going in). I do think the love for this is a bit much. As Dracula said, it's box-office domination, Oscar nominations, and placement on AFI's top 100 seem bizarre.

1. The Exorcist My favorite (along with the original Omen) I have listened to the book three or four times - the movie is so true to the book - love it. 2. The Shining Good and scary - but did not make sense as far as the book went - I understood more about the hotel from the book and the TV movie 3. The Sixth Sense I thought that one was really good Read more: comingsoon.boards.net/thread/242/quick-opinions-movie-edition?page=2#ixzz3HdS6BMA0

The Exorcist Good, not great. Fun John fact, it was the movie I watched right before having sex for the first time. The girl I was with was scared, and I consoled her... by having sex with her. B (for the memory)
The Shining Maybe my all-time favorite horror film. A-
The Sixth Sense Super overrated. At no point in time did the twist surprise me, the fact that it caught seemingly all of America off guard made me feel like our audiences are full of idiots. C

I'm with Ramplate on the Shining. It omitted a lot from the book which would have made the film flow a little better. Even the final scene with Jack in the photo would have made a little more sense. It's a great horror movie but it does have some flaws to it that could have been ironed out some.

Your braveness in watching the movie recently inspired me to re-watch it next October. It should be an interesting experience. Excellent. I figured it was finally time to bite the bullet on it, especially since it's one of those movies that's too big to ignore.
The Exorcist
Fantastic and completely engrossing; one of the best horror films I've ever seen. Even though I wouldn't call it scary, William Friedkin nonetheless instills it with an incredible sense of atmosphere that draws us in more and more the longer it goes on. And most importantly, the characters are very well-established so that all the terror has real weight instead of serving as obligatory scares and thrills.
****/****
The Shining
Another one of the best horror films I've seen. Yet again, the sense of atmosphere just wraps you up in the film and Stanley Kubrick directs it phenomenally. Jack Nicholson of course hits it out of the park and just like The Exorcist, it's hard to look away from the screen.
****/****
The Sixth Sense
My review from Letterboxd last year:
Remember when M. Night Shyamalan used to be good? I know, it seems like such a long time ago. But watching The Sixth Sense again for the first time in quite a few years (and for the first time on Blu Ray) made me miss the old M. Night Shyamalan, whose ego hadn't yet gotten in the way of his creativity. Some people might say that when it comes to movies like The Sixth Sense, after the first viewing, it becomes all about the twist ending. No.
No.
The twist ending is merely an added bonus to the real story. The real story here is the story of acceptance in coming to terms with shocking truths, and how it applies to each of the three main characters. In that regard, The Sixth Sense is a highly emotional film, and upon this re-watch, I have a strong feeling that's what Shyamalan was really going for. He's telling much more than a ghost story here; he's telling a human one. Think about it. There are what, only 2 or 3 "scary scenes" in the whole film. The ghost element is there mainly to fuel the personal journeys of Malcolm, Cole and his mom, and to get them where they need to be. Before now, I hadn't looked at this movie that way, but it adds an extra layer to it that I happily welcome. And beyond that, this is a very well-made film. Shyamalan shows definite skill behind the camera (where, oh where, did that go in his later years?), and there's very strong acting by Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette.
I used to really like The Sixth Sense, but now I love it.

It's a great horror movie but it does have some flaws to it that could have been ironed out some. Right, when I watched the movie I had no idea who all these weird people were that were popping up and scaring Mrs. Torrence all of a sudden. Where the books have Mr. Torrence slowly decending into madness while researching the history of the hotel. Jack was just Jack Crazy. I really liked the maze, but I wonder what Kubrick would have done with the moving topiary? =========================================== Exorcist Fun - I was only 12 when it came out, but I would have loved to have seen it in the theater - I DO however, remember all the hype and news for weeks about people fainting and having to be carried out - it was a real movie phenomenon when it came out - and look at these ticket prices!!! $3.00 for adults (lol 75¢ for children ) Folks, this masterpiece was made when they did not make extensive use CGI - they rigged everything and most of time for a single take - just amazing when you think about it

1. The Exorcist - B
It's not scary, but it is a well executed movie.
2. The Shining - B-
In the past, I've expressed my distaste for this movie, so this should come as no surprise. Kubrick is just not for me.
3. The Sixth Sense - C-
I've never liked this movie. M.Night is a bad writer and director.

Or we could do it from home and use the Shoutbox to comment like true 21st century boys and girls.
But we have to get everybody to press play at the exact same millisecond, that part is essential.
