The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - One of the few films I'd label a masterpiece of the musical genre. Demy made some strong films, but this is undoubtedly his best. Featuring wonderful performances and a romantic storyline that actually works exceptionally well, Umbrellas of Cherbourg is simply one of the best French films ever made. 9/10 You've Got Mail - Never seen it. Or Sleepless in Seattle. Don't believe I'm missing much, though I'm sure Neverending will explain why I'm wrong and missing out on seminal classics of the '90s. Tron - It's ahead of its time and an oddity for a live action Disney film, but despite wonky storytelling Tron works a lot more often than it doesn't. The special effects are really unique and its examination of computer games is far superior to any other films of its time. It's dated but fun and certainly better than the lackluster sequel, Tron: Legacy, which was as ridiculous as the original but without the fun. 7/10

You’ve Got Mail was openly mocked upon release. The “cute girl” you met on AOL Chat Room wasn’t Meg Ryan. If you were lucky, it was Doomsday. If you were unlucky, it was Ramplate and you’d be buried in his backyard right now. It’s funny we’ve gone from that to the PG Cooper Generation which is people fighting on Twitter and dick pics on Snapchat. I can’t tell which is worse. Would be interesting to re-watch You’ve Got Mail. It might have an innocence now that could be amusing.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: A pretty hard movie to dislike. It's lively and is working with a fun concept at its core. The film's story is not exactly the most original tale ever told but Demy works it well and really makes that bittersweet ending hit hard.
You've Got Mail: Never saw it.
Tron: Look, they tried to do a thing. The fact that they tried to make a movie about computers before all that many people owned them and that they tried to do some really early CGI took some vision. However, as a narrative this movie is just boring as hell. It has a weak protagonist and the whole mythology of this computer world just isn't as interesting as they think it is. Elements of the sequel work better, but that movie is far from perfect as well.

You've Got Mail is a great feel-good flick, and I actually prefer it to SIS.
Though that may just be because I have a thing for cute little bookstores...

3. Great movie that won’t be acknowledged in PG Cooper’s 1999 video essay - if he ever makes it. You have 4 months left. I was scrolling through this thread aimlessly and stumbled across this. I did sort of make this video eventually.

The Act of Killing: Looks at a very interesting situation, but I'm not the biggest fan of the "have the killers make movies about their genocide" concept. Probably prefer The Look of Silence for that reason. Still, a interesting look into the face of banal evil. 8/10
Basic Instinct: Very dumb movie. The cast and Verhoven do their best to elevate it, but Joe Eszterhas is a hack and there's only so much they can do with the material. It's a movie with something like three memorable scenes that its reputation rests on and the rest is a snooze. 3/10
Enter the Void: I'm a Gaspar Noé skeptic. Dude has talent but he's a total edgelord troll and his movies get tedious once the shock has worn off and this one in particular is way too long and totally overstays its welcome. 4/10

Only one I've seen is Basic Instinct. It's dumb as hell, even by erotic thriller standards, but Verheoven shoots the shit out of it while Douglas and Stone give fun performances. C

3. Quantum of Solace: I don't hate it like some Bond fans do, but it's not very good. 3. Quantum of Solace: Terrible. One of the worst Bond movies ever. Needlessly abandons many of the series' traditions and offers nothing in return to make up for it. Also just a mess of a story and a very poorly edited action movie. *1/2 out of Four 3. Quantum of Solace - Very... blah. I'm not really a Bond fan, but even I thought the things that make Bond Bond were severly lacking here. 5/10 Quantum of Solace - yeah, I don't hate it either. It has some fun action sequences and although it's not a great film it's not the worst thing either. My opinion has tempered a bit since my first viewing but it's still not awful. Also, there are a few Bond films worse than QoS. Quantum of SolaceI liked this movie initially, but further viewings haven't done it any favors. The story isn't nearly as compelling as the ones in Casino Royale and Skyfall, and Marc Forster feels almost too preoccupied with cramming as many action scenes into the short 108-minute running time as possible. Daniel Craig is excellent as Bond once again, but mostly everything else is pretty sub-par. **/**** I’ve had a semi lazy Friday. Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace have played in the background. They’re airing on TNT. Anyway… it got me thinking, are people staying hating on Quantum of Solace. The Craig Era came and went and I think we’ve most arrived at a consensus. Skyfall, as good as it may be, time jumped from rookie Bond to old man Bond. We never got a Daniel Craig movie in which Bond is in his prime. Then there’s Spectre which most people consider a disappointment. And No Time to Die… well… it is what it is. Casino Royale remains the crowning achievement of the Craig Era, similar to Pierce Brosnan and GoldenEye. That leaves us with Quantum of Solace. It’s the direct sequel to Casino Royale and features a series highlight with the opera scene. It also avoids all the baggage that comes with the later Craig films. I think Quantum of Solace is due for a reappraisal, similar to what happened with Timothy Dalton and his movies.

The current Bond movie to revive is clearly Tomorrow Never Dies. It's Michelle Yeoh's time.

Timothy Dalton's screenplays weren't cobbled together on the fly during a writers strike, unlike Quantum of Solace.

Only people that shit on Brosnan are disgruntled Timothy Dalton fans and young folks introduced to James Bond through the Daniel Craig films. But with the ever growing popularity of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible series, I do think there’s a whole new generation due to discover Pierce Brosnan. As insane as it may sound, Casino Royale is 16 years old. There are audiences that are too young to have experienced Craig’s tenure in the role. And with the re-release of the GoldenEye video game and Michelle Yeoh’s newfound fame with the youth, I do think they’ll be a Tomorrow Never Dies resurgence.

Tomorrow Never Dies was the first Bond movie I saw in theaters. I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen at the time. The plot is one of the most bananas storylines in Bond which is saying something but I'll be damned if it isn't highly entertaining.

Tomorrow Never Dies was the first Bond movie I saw in theaters. I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen at the time. Better than Men in Black?? The villain’s scheme was to use “fake news” to start a war. You coulda made this movie during the Trump presidency and audiences wouldn’t have blinked.

The Mask of Zorro - loved it - I remember being thrilled to pieces because he was one of my big boyhood heroes. The Mask of Zorro: Pretty cool movie, a reboot before reboot was a buzz word that did a pretty damn good job of bringing the character back to life. Cool sword fights. ***1/2 Mask of Zorro: One of my favorites as a kid and still surprisingly enjoyable. "The Mask of Zorro" was a lot of fun. The action sequences are grounded and never overly outlandish, the performances were all very good especially Hopkins, the production design was top-notch, and it didn't feel too long despite the running time. Everything comes together a little too nicely throughout the film though, I mean they could've at least thrown in a twist or something to shake things up, but it never happens. The film plays out pretty much exactly how you think it will, but it executes everything pretty well so I can't really complain. The movie definitely has a nice energy and charm to it all, and it's a fun outing even if it plays everything a bit safe. 7/10 Been meaning to revisit Mask of Zorro for its 25th anniversary. It was a boyhood favorite and I’m glad to report that it has held up quite well. Old-fashioned fun. Gorgeous to look at. Top tier James Horner score. Charming cast. Still the hottest Catherine Zeta Jones ever been. And although Desperado is the Hollywood movie that Antonio Banderas is more associated with, he was absolutely perfect here. The man was born to play Zorro, even if it’s not the Zorro. Speaking of which, Anthony Hopkins is a lot better than I remembered. I believe that was my one gripe with the movie upon release. He was certainly odd casting. But I stand corrected. It was a throwback performance and Hopkins also surprisingly pulls off the physicality of the role. That all said, I do have some issues with the script. So… Don Diego just chills in prison for 20 years and then easily escapes when Governor Montero returns? Ok. Also, not quite sure what Montero’s scheme was. So he’s stealing gold to buy California from Mexico. That part I get. But that ain’t stopping the United States, sir. It just sounds like he’s doing the Mexicans a favor. “We’ll take this war off your hands.” But that’s all just background to the personal vendettas of the characters. So just a minor complaint. Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) I randomly watched that last month and forgot about it. Lovely cinematography but dumb plot. Sorry.

It's not a dumb plot. It's a film that as it progresses raises more questions/theories than it does answers and that's part of its brilliance.
Peter Weir's best film to me.
