Ben-Hur: Great example of the Hollywood epics of the 1950s and 80s. Lacks the sophistication of David Lean or the tighter pacing of Spartacus, but it's an engaging story that feels appropriately huge and has two great set-pieces. The last 40 minutes or so kind of drag. 4/5, but maybe 4.5/5
The Day the Earth Stood Still: Great mix of b-movie science-fiction with a more thoughtful exploration of human nature. Gort looks amazing and Bernard Herrmann's score is incredible. 4.5/5
Diabolique: Great little mystery thriller, even if it drags in spots. Simone Signoret and Vera Clouzot are great in the lead roles and that climax is famously chilling. 4/5

Ben-Hur: A prime example of epic Hollywood filmmaking at its finest, with a compelling story to boot. ****/****
The Day The Earth Stood Still: Haven't seen it.
Diabolique: Haven't seen it.

Ben-Her - Timur Bekmambotev's finest. The Day the Earth Stood Still - Keanu Reeves is amazing. Diabolique - Sharon Stone has never been sexier.

Misery: It's alright. Pretty straightforward adaptation of the book. Kathy Bates is really good, not as into James Caan in this one.
Thief: I've been meaning to give this one another look. First time I saw it would have been about twelve years ago and I found it kind of slow for a Michael Mann movie about a thief but maybe I'll give it another look.
Brian's Song: Never heard of it.

Misery: Good, not great. The movie as a whole is well-done, but the strongest stuff is the back-and-forth between Caan and Bates. ***/****
Thief: It's a good, solid little movie. James Caan is great in it, though. ***/****
Brian's Song: Haven't seen it.

Misery - How I feel watching most Netflix original movies.
Thief - What I call Netflix for having me pay to watch this crap.
Brian's Song - Brian never sang to me. We were too busy watching Netflix.

Misery: Rock solid. Kathy Bates performance is rightfully famous. Otherwise, it's a straightforward if effective little horror movie. B
Thief: It's been a while, but I remember it being pretty cool. Tangerine Dream score is great, Caan is effectively used, and it's really well put together. B+
Brian's Song: I prefer Bon's Song.

Let's get this going again.
1. The Conversation (1974)
2. The 'Burbs (1989)
3. Election (1999)
1. Watched it in middle school. The score by David Shire and the toilet scene are engraved in my brain. 2. I’ve gone back-and-forth on it, but good movie as of last viewing. Check out Eerie, Indiana if you haven’t. 3. Great movie that won’t be acknowledged in PG Cooper’s 1999 video essay - if he ever makes it. You have 4 months left.

Coppola's weakest of his 1970s run, but that's understandable. Awesome thriller which makes great use of sound. Good performance from Hackman too. 5/5 2. The Burbs - It's fun. Might revisit since I feel I might have underappreciated it. 3/5 3. Election - Big fan. Very funny and with a stand-out performance from a young Reese Witherspoon. 4/5

1. Gonna be honest, when I went through the AFI many years ago I was not overly impressed with Maltese Falcon. I owe it a rewatch though, I find my opinions on things that I watched at 23 vs. 33 often change, sometimes drastically. 2. It's fine, it's an enjoyable movie that I think didn't warranted the talents of Steven Spielberg but not every movie needs to be Munich. 3. If I were to do my own Skeptic vs. Nostalgia thread this would be on it. And Labyrinth. And Dirty Dancing. And Footloose. And about 100 other 80s movies many of which are in Drac's thread.

It's the right time to bring this thread back. 1. The Maltese Falcon 2. The Terminal 3. Legend (1985) I actually just watched The Maltese Falcon a couple of weeks ago at The Alamo. Just as great as I remembered. I didn't see the appeal with The Terminal. The character was just too unrelateable. Jeeze, just walk out the bloody door already and get on with your life. The appeal of Legend for me comes down to Mia Sara, and that's about it. Tim Curry's prosthetics were fantastic, certainly. The movie is on the whole pretty weak. It's worth seeing once, but that's all. That unicorn horn obviously wobbling up and down that poor horse's head is laughable.

The Maltese Falcon - Flown the coop.
The Terminal - You should be damned ashamed of yourself for bringing up a Tom Hanks movie called Terminal when he's got the Corona, you bastard.
Legend - I am.

It's the right time to bring this thread back. 1. The Maltese Falcon 2. The Terminal 3. Legend (1985) Been a pretty long time since I've seen any of them. Maltese Falcon: Iconic. Great visual style and protagonist. Central story is a little loopy, but whatever. The Terminal: Its fine. Great art direction, decent acting, but it's the kind of thing you watch on network television on a Saturday afternoon in the 90s. Legend: Its really been a long time on this one. I remember the Tim Curry devil looking cool and Tom Cruise in a loincloth looking wack.

The Maltese Falcon: Way more exciting than I remembered. An engrossing crime story told with a lot of confidence that fires on all cylinders. A+
The Terminal: Paradoxically, a movie dismissed for being beneath Spielberg and also a movie only Spielberg could have made that good. Regardless, it's definitely a minor entry. B-
Legend: Amazing make-up effects and a generally badass performance from Tim Curry, but the rest of the movie is a mess. The hero is lame, the journey doesn't resonant, and there aren't enough set-pieces. D+

It's the right time to bring this thread back. 1. The Maltese Falcon 2. The Terminal 3. Legend (1985) The Maltese Falcon - Been a while since I saw it, but I remember thinking it was fine/good. Though, I'll fully admit I owe it a re-watch.
The Terminal - One of Spielberg's most severely underrated movies, if you ask me. It MIGHT even be one of my favorites of his. A true, surprisingly engrossing delight from beginning to end and a real testament to the innate charisma of Tom Hanks.
Legend - Never seen it.

The Maltese Falcon - I always have issues with it when I watch it, but there's no denying it's one of the best film noirs ever made and brims with wonderful performances from an incredible cast and set the stage for the superior noirs of the '40s (The Big Sleep, Out of the Past) to follow. 9/10
The Terminal - Haven't seen it in awhile and would probably pick on it more if I did, but it's passable if underwhelming entertainment. Hanks and Spielberg are lifting up unworthy material, but the concept is fun and it's ultimately harmless. 6/10
Legend - Another I haven't seen in a long time but I don't remember anything about it being good or memorable. Coming off of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott lacks the world building and stakes necessary for a fantasy film to make it work. The elements are there, but none of it ever comes together. Not so much as bad but more underwhelming and empty. 5/10

The Maltese Falcon: Way more exciting than I remembered. This confirms my suspicion. I'll have to see if there's a half-decent blu-ray or if it's streaming somewhere.
