NeverendingJust because we analyzed the hell out of it, talked about it for months it seemed like. I love Hamlet though, it's really entertaining and free flowing for Shakespeare. But yeah, we spent more time on Hamlet than anything else.

For novels, I read Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The Ghost Writer (we had to choose from a bunch of modern books for an assignment), and Watership Down. There are others I'm probably forgetting, but those for sure. For Shakespeare, we did Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet (along with the Zeffirelli movie), Macbeth (along with the Polanski movie), Hamlet (along with the Branagh movie) and King Lear (along with two made for tv films).

I have taught: Hmelt, Macbeth, R&J, Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Of Mice and Men (which I hadn't actually read until then), and... oh The Hobbit. And a few pieces from Canterbury.

To tell you the truth I cant remember anything in my school years being mandatory reading. Only book I ever remember them making us read in class was some Pocahontas book and Hamlet.

Which books did you guys read in Elementary and Middle School? I'll always remember Sarah, Plain and Tall. Not because the book was anything special but because there's a movie with Glenn Close and Christopher Walken. Bridge to Terabithia is probably the biggest generation gap. I think I read it in... 6th grade... and this was WAY before the Josh Hutcherson movie. The version my 1990's class saw was the 1985 one with Annette O'Toole. Tell me if you can spot the difference:

Seriously. And yet, everyone acted super immature when the brief moment of boobs showed up. We also saw Schindler's List in history class - which had LOTS of boobs - but we kept our commentary to ourselves that time. Nothing kills a boner quicker than the holocaust.

Which books did you guys read in Elementary and Middle School? I know we read some books about racism in Elementary school, but I don't remember what. I actually read Of Mice and Men in high school for a project, but that was done without any suggestion from the school.

I know we read some books about racism in Elementary school. ... the fuck? Unless you're talking about the Dr. Seuss book where two groups of people fight about whether or not to butter their bread. ... I'm probably remembering that book wrong. lol. In middle school I read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Then we saw the movie which had a YOUNG Morgan Freeman in it. We also read The Devil's Arithmetic, a holocaust book, and were among the first classes to watch the Kirsten Dunst movie. I'll never forget it because some guy in class shouted out, "wait... the girl from Jumanji has tits now?" and everyone laughed like an idiot while the teacher shook his head in disappointment. I bet that guy was Doomsday . He's been hiding the truth from me for 12 years. Brittany Murphy was also in the movie.

I know we read some books about racism in Elementary school. ... the fuck? I distinctly remember a book dealing with the chain gang, white racists referring to blacks as "boy", and the teachers explaining to us how we were gonna hear "the N word" and how it was very inappropriate.

Packers boxed up my entire life up on Friday, movers come today to pick it all up and then I leave for Nebraska on either Tuesday or Wednesday. It all depends on how my brother and father feel after they fly in tomorrow. So far the best part of civilian life has been not having to shave.

And I know exactly what you mean about shaving, my job I had before I transferred we had to wear half/full face masks so everyone had to be clean shaven. It's nice not to have to worry about shaving every day.

New Jersey to Nebraska is a good two day drive.
It's funny cause I was the only clean shaven member of my family and now my little brother is cause he became a firefighter. So I get to finally rub it in his face.

The last two years of high school were great because we got to pick our english classes. I remember choosing Satire and Irony because we got to read Catch 22, 1984, Slaughterhouse Five, and Animal Farm. I also remember enjoying One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Lords of Discipline in high school. I didn't do a lot of the reading assignments because I was an ass who was too cool for school, but I actually enjoyed those books.
