I just realised that you said Bob Ross.
Mega Fail.
I thought you said Bob Fosse.
I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO BOB FOSSE IS.

Anyway...yeah, his painting show was inexpicably on UK TV at silly o'clock in the 00s and my friend and I loved to watch it and listen to his philosophies on life.
I wish there were more Bob Ross' in the world. And less Bob Fosse's.
If Bob Fosse is reading this, I apologise.
EDIT: Bob Fosse is dead. I'm good.

I'm right there with you, my man. Though all I have is cider at present.
PTSD?
He fought in Vietnam, or something?

One of my favourite artists died last year aged 37, reasons unknown but probably suicide judging by the content of his music. This song now kills me whenever I hear it. And the YouTube comments below move me to tears every time: Haunting is the appropriate word. "I have the ghosts of Autumn murders walk me home." I just tonight discovered his cover of MJ's Human Nature: mp3box.to/user/player/?song=432374

I am currently nursing an Asahi. I've had several Kirins though, prior to this one.

Bob Ross too. He died 20 years ago. That TV show you watched in the 2000's is from the 80's. In America, it aired on public television after episodes of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Can you imagine watching those two back-to-back?

So, my family's indoor cat got loose and ran away this past Saturday night, and he's still missing. There was a possible sighting of him Monday night in a neighborhood a few miles away, but we're still not completely sure if it was him or not; it could just as well have been another orange tabby cat. I just want to find him, or for him to come back; he's the best cat we've ever had and it kills me to think that our time with him could end so suddenly and we'd never see him again. We have his food laid out on the front and back porch, and his litterbox sitting out on the back -- apparently, cats can pick up their own scent from that if they're close enough. We've got flyers out, and I really hope they help; I want this little guy back. Well, I'm very happy to report that he came back -- at 3:15 a.m. this past Sunday. But it was really kind of an extremely lucky coincidence, because my Mom had gotten up to go to the bathroom, then decided to randomly check the front porch where we've been leaving out food and water. Lo and behold, there he was, eating. She slowly opened the window after he saw her and he jumped back in. He's two pounds lighter now, but it's such a relief to have him back. And true to our word, we got him a collar, which will be going on soon.

Girlfriend and I are looking for a new apartment. We decided that if we keep living in our current apartment, we'll never be able to save enough money to buy a house... so we're looking to downsize and go less expensive. I called about a dozen places today and visited two this afternoon, and was instantly reminded that I hate looking for apartments. This is awful. Somebody just kill me.

It's crappy now, but think of the long term rewards. I'm also saving for a house so I've cut out a lot of unnecessary spending. I'm on year 2 of a handbag ban and it's difficult sometimes. When I'm debating a purchase I think to myself "would I rather have this item now or a water softener/granite countertops/plantation shutters?" and it turns into an easy decision to make.

Oh I know. This year I bought an external hard drive, specifically to start downloading movies and television series and cut down on Blu-ray purchases. It's nearly the end of March and I haven't bought one yet, so I feel like I'm doing better. But I've somehow managed to nearly download a terabyte of content in about a month and a half, so I'm debating buying a second now. Kind of defeats my original intent.

Make a list of your expenses - then look at the big picture and eliminate the ones you can live without.
Open up a separate "house" account at your bank Set an amount each pay period you can deal with and deposit that amount into the "house" account first - then pay bills from your regular checking or whatever. Don't touch the "House" account until you get enough in the "house" account to get a Certificate of Deposit, transfer that money into one of those.
Keep doing that Certificates of Deposit tie up the money (early withdrawal will incur penalties) so you don't use it until it matures - you can get them for varying amounts and time lengths and get a better interest rate.
When they mature, and if you are able to do it - roll them over again to keep collecting that interest - or turn them into a CoD that has an even better interest rate.

I thought CoDs interest rates were garbage these days. I have a separate savings account for the house fund. Each month I put in some money on pay day. Christmas bonuses this year really helped beef up the account. The portion of my tax refund that I opted to get in cash will be deposited right into that same savings account. Ideally I wouldn't buy a house with less than a 20% down payment because I don't want to pay a PMI, but I've started looking at properties in the area and I think I could easily scrape together at least 10%. My goal is to have a mortgage payment equal to or less than what I've been saving on a monthly basis since I've already gotten myself trained to not use that portion of my paycheck.
I've got real estate fever. Hopefully I have less than a year in the place I'm at now. I am ready to get out of here.

CoD rates may not be as good as they used to be since things dipped, but they still have to be slightly ahead of Savings or Checking accounts to make people want them. Better rates usually come in higher initial dollar amounts or longer term CoDs
Shop around for a good rate and you might find a good one.Banks are pretty competitive for things like that that will stay with them longer than people's usual in and out cash flow accounts. They'll give you a higher rate for something they will be able to use over a longer run.
Look at some credit union rates - they may be higher than regular banks

So my job fucked up my tax withholding on my paychecks and now I owe the City of New York a lot of money. They never factored in my local tax withholding, despite having to talk to them directly about after I was hired full time because they mistakenly applied all my taxes to New Jersey. And because the line item total my pay stubs combines State and local taxes I never noticed. It's adjusted now. And I get to look forward to even smaller paychecks. God Bless America.

95% sure I'm turning in my two weeks notice next week at my job. No, I don't have another one lined up. Yes, I know it's a bad idea but I think I would describe my current job as 'poisonous.' Every day I'm rattled, extremely stressed to the point where I lose sleep a lot of the time because I'm so nervous about the next day, I'm constantly criticized and that strange sensation I've been feeling I believe is depression. It's also messing with my relationship as my lady doesn't want me unhappy although she would much rather me have any job at all which I can't sustain. I have enough money in the bank to last me quite a while during a job hunt but in the end it comes down to either feeling miserable day in day out or taking a risk and seeing how I turn out. Nervous as hell but in a way kinda exciting.

That's good though, Dooms. Honestly, taking a big risk like that is what motivates many people. I'll be doing the same exact thing if I don't sell my work right off the bat.

Brother, I know exactly how you feel.
I giving my current situation until end of the year to save up some more money and slash my final student loan. Then I'm out.
Good hunting. You deserve something, at the very least, that doesn't drag you down.

Huzzah for quitting jobs!
I plan on moving on from my current position in the near future as well. Just need to tidy up the resume and start shipping it out. Doing that this weekend for sure.

Yeah Dooms, I remember being in your position. I was miserable at my job, so I decided to take the leap and go back to school. Now I have a job that, while still stressful, actually feels meaningful which make sall the difference.

I think finding meaning is a big factor too. Any job is going to have its ups and downs for sure but if you just don't care about what you're doing whatsoever and there are 10,000x more downs than ups (like my job) it takes its toll eventually and that's exactly what's happening. But thanks guys for the kind words, glad to know I'm not in the same boat!
