Reading up on Darling, I feel okay supporting it. I do have to question Repulsion a little bit though. Certainly an important step in Polanski's own evolution, but does it's importance grow beyond just Polanski? Yeah, for example I think Black Swan was definitely drawing on it.

Great year, this will be fun.
Barry Lyndon One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Nashville Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles Jaws
And trust me when I say that it pains me to leave off Picnic at Hanging Rock and Dog Day Afternoon, but this is one of the best years of film period. Hell, it's tough to leave Monty Python and the Holy Grail off this list. But... the five I listed aren't just great films but really important in the cinema realm.

1. Jaws: Duh.
2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: One of the most beloved comedies of all-time.
3. Barry Lyndon: Totally unique cinematography and this certainly had some influence on modern epics.
4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: One of those classic films that has resonated just as deeply in pop culture as it does with film buffs and critics.
5. The Rocky Horror Picture Show: I kind of hate this movie, but there's no denying the cult influence this has had over the years. It also can still elicit a lot of passion from modern audiences.
Honourable Mentions:
Dog Day Afternoon: Pains me to leave this off because the film is brilliant.
Dersu Uzuala: A unique production from the great Kurosawa.
Nashville: Certainly a classic, but I think the films I listed are more worthy.
Picnic at Hanging Rock: Announced Peter Weir in a unique way.
Love and Death: The last of the early funny ones.

Jaws: No brainer Nashville: No brainer, invented the whole "hyperlink" format. Monty Python and The Holy Grail: Cited as an influence by too many comedians to ignore. The Stepford Wives: Probably more important culturally than cinematically but a "stepford wife" is a pretty common thing to cite in the discourse. The Rocky Horror Picture Show: I don't know that it invented the midnight movie per se, but it certainly ran with it.

Do we have a 70s disaster film?
If not, is The Towering Inferno more deserving than Nashville?
The other four are good.

1. The Passion of Joan of Arc: One of the greatest silent films of all-time and a landmark for screen acting.
2. Steamboat Willie: That mouse is pretty damn endearing.
3. Steamboat Bill Jr.: Inspired Steamboat Willie and is generally considered one of Keaton's final classics.
4. The Crowd: Now considered one of the greatest films of the silent era.
5. The Man Who Laughs: Inspired the Joker and was one of the final silent German expressionist films.
Honourable Mentions:
The Circus: I love the hell out of this movie, but for most this is beneath Chaplin's other features.
The Last Command: I've heard some pretty rad things.

The Passion of Joan of Arc: Fifth best movie of all time The Crowd: 38th best movie of all time
Steamboat Bill, Jr.: Buster Keaton masterpiece Steamboat Willie: First animated film with sound, also the originator of a very annoying corporate mascot who won't go away The Man Who Laughs: Creepy villain

Question here: If we can't nominate short films then wouldn't Steamboat Willie not be included? Because if we can include an 8 minute movie, then Bunuel's work should be on here.
Un Chien Andalou The Crowd The Passion of Joan of Arc Steamboat Bill, Jr. Pandora's Box

Un Chien Andalou The Crowd The Passion of Joan of Arc Steamboat Bill, Jr. Pandora's Box Ian will disqualify it. But make no mistake. Mickey Mouse is the most important thing from 1928. And not just for what it represents culturally and as a mascot for a corporation. The Disney Company has turned copyright laws into a mockery by doing everything it can to keep Steamboat Willie from becoming public domain.

We're bending the rules for the early years since features were not the be all and end all in those days. As for Un Chien Andalou, it'll be a no brainer when we get to 1929.

I go off the They Shoot Pictures list and the year is off sometimes. I'll change Un Chien Andalou for Steamboat Willie then.
