Nosferatu: Granddaddy of modern horror Nanook of the North: I know we've generally been excluding documentaries but this one's too important to ignore. Haxan: Freaky crazy movie that became a cult hit during the 60s because it was fun to watch while on acid. Dr. Mabuse, Der Spieler: Crazy pulp crime movie about Weimar decadence. Foolish Wives: Infamously grandiose Erich von Stroheim movie, first film to cost more than a million dollars Seconded. Thirded. Those are definitely the right choices.

Ian, on your master list you put The Lady Eve for 41 instead of Sergeant York.

Ian, on your master list you put The Lady Eve for 41 instead of Sergeant York. He made the same mistake once before... I'm not saying which round though because I frankly prefer the list he mistakenly posted...

I've got nothing to add to this year besides Nosferatu.

Sigh....
Anyway, I'm going to include Nanook as an honourary choice this time, because there's only so many options. I'm still trying to decide what to do with documentaries, perhaps having honourary mentions for the really important ones. If you have suggestions let me know.
Next year: 1917
Sorry for so many early ones in a row guys.

Isn't a lot of Nanook staged anyway?
1917
1. Cleopatra: A big production for the day and the year's top grossing film.
2. A Man There Was: Another film from Victor Sjöström (The Phantom Carriage) and helped give Swedish cinema greater financial freedom.
3. The Gulf Between: Currently a lost film. First film made in technicolor and only the fourth feature length colour film.
4. Straight Shooting: John Ford's first feature length film.
5. The Poor Little Rich Girl: It's good enough for the national registry. It also can serve as a representative of actress Mary Pickford.

I honestly got nothing for 1917. The top 1,000 list doesn't have any for the year and on Letterbox I haven't seen any of the films either. The highest rated ones were Chaplin and Keaton shorts. I'll second Cooper's list because he's clearly done the research on it.

Cleopatra
Poor Little Rich Girl (although Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm sold more tickets)
The Butcher Boy - Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton in his first film
Well, there's three

Isn't a lot of Nanook staged anyway? Almost the entire film is staged. Sadly, it's still a pivotal film in documentary history because so many of the award winning documentaries that followed were also either staged or played pick and choose with which facts they included in order to deliver the message they want and be more entertaining to the target audience. It's rare for documentaries to be completely fabricated these days the way Nanook of the North was, but they still play it fast and loose with reality. For example, the 2012 Oscar winning documentary Searching For Sugar Man made a number of deliberate omissions to the life of Sixto Rodriguez in order to make him appear far more obscure a musician than he actually was.

I'd be willing to swap out Cleopatra or Shooting Straight in order to include Wild and Wooly. I don't know about Unmasked though; it's a short, which we generally haven't included, and it doesn't have a wikipedia page. I do however strongly think A Man There Was and The Gulf Between should be included, even if the latter means I'll never see the 100% completion of this list I strive for.

Dark Knight, The: Gold standard for blockbusters going forward. Multiple pop culture memes. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days: Poster-child for the Romanian New Wave Cloverfield: The secretive advertising campaign has been influential and it also probably went a long way in making found footage a mainstay of popular horror a good ten years after Blair Witch. Milk: Kind of seems appropriate today, might feel differently a few days from now. Not many other choices. Iron Man: Seems to have done well for the studio that produced it.

Wall-E It's hard to go wrong with Pixar, as long as talking vehicles aren't involved. Gran Torino Clint Eastwood, going out with a bang.

Milk? It seems to have been all but forgotten, hasn't it?
And Defiance was forgotten about a week after it came out. I think Taken was more influential than either of those. I also don't see why Gran Torino is important.
What about Synedoche, NY ?

The Dark Knight - Officially began the Chris Nolan revolution of cinema.
Iron Man - Launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Twilight - Started Hollywood's current obsession with vampires and turning every young adult novel into a franchise.
Wall E - I'm not sure if it's important or not, but people love it. I know you guys are voting for Cloverfield but people REALLY hated that movie. They said the shaky cam made them wanna vomit. They said the monster was a major disappointment. The J.J. Abrams hate-fest casually began with that movie. I think Wall-E is a safer choice.

Abrams hate-fest casually began with that movie. I think Wall-E is a safer choice. It has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, made 170 million dollars, it's at 7.1 on IMDB, Letterboxd ratings seem to be averaging high. Doesn't sound like hate to me.
