I'm surprised people are choosing Public Enemy over Little Caesar. I always thought Caesar was the more influential mob film.

You're right Ian, and my case for the inclusion of Little Caesar would be:
How many cartoon characters are based off of Edward G Robinson in Little Caesar?
How often do you hear references such as "myeh, myeh, see?" When people think "old-timey gangster," their first thought is Edward G Robinson in that role, or someone copying him in that role. That is a character that's stayed in the public lexicon for years, and is just as iconic as those in M or Dracula or Frankenstein.

I guess I'm just clinging to James Cagney as an iconic gangster figure.

Alright then, moving on.
Next year: 2013
I know you guys dont like the recent years, but I do think that Gravity and Frozen are both pretty clear cases.

1. The Wolf of Wall Street: Already has inspired copycats like The Big Short, War Dogs, and the upcoming Gold while also serving as a timely portrait of economic greed.
2. Gravity: The most unique blockbuster we've seen in a long time and a film that really resonated with audiences.
3. 12 Years a Slave: At this point stands as the definitive cinematic portrayal of American slavery.
4. Frozen: An inescapable juggernaut that has solidified Disney Animation's return to the top of fmaily entertainment commercially and artistically.
5. Inside Llewyn Davis: I have a hunch as time goes by Inside Llewyn Davis will be seen more and more as a masterpiece. The film was highly acclaimed back in the day and its appeal is timeless. Was also listed 11th on BBC's recent poll of the top 100 films of the 21st century, substantially higher than any other film from 2013.

I guess I'll move my support from Man of Steel (which was basically a troll pick) to Her.

I'm 100% for Her, the most poignant film about relationships not named Before... I thought it was the best film of the year other than 12 Years a Slave.

Her is interesting because, while I dont think it had much of an impcat now, it seems to be a very accurate portrayl of a possible future and so has great potential to become more and more important.
PG, what is your argument for Llewyn Davis?

Yeah, that's how I feel about Her as well. It reflects on how our relationships are evolving (or rather devolving?) with our growing technology and how our means of communicating with one another is almost becoming a lost art. I think beyond it being just a terrific film with top notch writing, acting, and a highly plausible representation of a near future it's the only film I can recall that so masterfully delves into our relationships with one another and with technology and does so while not preaching that technology is good or bad but states that it's more dependent on what it's used for. I don't think we've even truly felt the actual importance of Her yet, it wasn't a hit at the box office and I'm not sure if people still have fully embraced it for the beautifully insightful film that it is. It's a film that will only grow with our changing culture, and I have a feeling we'll look back on it and say "wow, Spike Jonze really did nail it with this film".

PG, what is your argument for Llewyn Davis? I suppose I just suspect that as time goes by Inside Llewyn Davis will be celebrated more and more as a masterpiece, a classic of its time, and one of the Coen's best movies. The film receives some of the best reviews of any film in 2013 and was recently listed the 11th best film of the 21st century by the BBC (substantially higher than any other 2013 film).

Yeah sorry PG, I think we are going with Her for the last spot. Fuck you. Nah I'm just kidding, Her's a good choice too. 1. MASH: Because suicide is painless. 2. The Conformist: Because it's beautiful, complex, and most certainly had an influence on subsequent thrillers in terms of style and tone. The imagery is particularly important. 3. Patton: Because it's iconic and seemingly inseparable from the man himself. 4. Five Easy Pieces: Because counter-culture, Jack Nicholson, and some iconic scenes. 5. Little Big Man: Because it's anti-establishment and an important film in regards to First Nations depictions in mainstream film.
