The Avengers: Infinity War - Review Thread

I was spared by Thanos

For the good of the universe.

I lived. All glory to Thanos.

I didn't make it, either.  

It occurs to me that some civilizations may not survive Thanos' culling, particularly the ones he'd already hit, like Gamora and Drax's.  Since Drax was killed, it's pretty clear Thanos made a 50/50 sweep of the entire universe without exception.  If a species was brand new, and only had a handful of people, they're almost certainly doomed.  Civilizations already on the brink due to natural disaster, war, plague, etc. would be pushed over the edge.  The way events were described in GotG, it sounded as though the slaughter on his world was a recent event.  

Killing half the people of a civilization couldn't push it over the edge. Unless there were two.

Not a peacefully stable civilization, no.  I'm not entirely certain Earth would survive, since we are neither peaceful or stable.  The level of chaos in the first hour alone could be enough to trigger a nuclear Armageddon.  

Just because Thanos didn't kill you, doesn't mean you'll live.  You could be struck by a car with no driver.  A plane with no pilot could crash into your house.  A huge number of people will burn or suffocate in one of the countless fires which result in people disappearing, combined with a fire department cut in half who can't get to any of the fires because all the roads are blocked by vehicles with no drivers.  Those fires will run rampant across the world, killing more and more, plus destroying valuable resources.  Dogs and cats, living together.  Mass hysteria!

  

The comic book premise was better. Thanos is the Mad Titan seeking to please death. If the MCU premise is a presumed future shortage of resources, why didn't he just use the Infinity Stones to create endless reusable resources?

Marvel had to play it safe because there was always the possibility that Warner Bros was gonna pull Darkseid out of their ass. They had to make Thanos more distinctive than his comic book counterpart. I think this adaptation was great. Anything resembling the comic book would have seemed D.C.-esque.

I have to agree.  Killing half the universe attempting to please Death is just stupid.  Everybody dies eventually.  Since Death is an infinite being, the average lifespan of mortal beings is so short that it's hardly noticeable to her.  Rushing the process isn't going to impress her.  It certainly didn't in the comics.

As for Darkseid, I don't imagine that Kevin Feige was too worried about that.  This is Zack Snyder and WB we're talking about here.  Even if they had used Darkseid in Justice League, he would have been just as blandly generic as Steppenwolf.  The blandest of Marvel villains (and there have been plenty) is far more interesting than Steppenwolf was.
