‘Suicide Squad’ Getting Reshoots to Bring Levity to the DC Extended Universe

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is many things, but it is not fun to watch. It’s a movie steeped in darkness, and any brief moment of levity is like a ray of sunshine breaking through a hurricane of despair. It’s a movie you endure rather than enjoy, and if people are going to see a blockbuster film, they tend to want something that might make them smile more often than not.

Ironically, that good feeling may come from the bad guys. Birth.Movies.Death. is reporting that Warner Bros. is putting “tens of millions of dollars” into reshoots for Suicide Squad to make the film more lighthearted. A source tells BMD that all of the levity in the “Bohemian Rhapsody” trailer was pretty much every single joke in the film, and since fans responded so well to that trailer, the studio wants more of it for the movie. That means more jokes and more banter, and I’m absolutely fine with that.

In fact, if you go back to the Comic-Con sizzle reel for Suicide Squad, you’ll see that the film came off as far more somber, and perhaps that’s what director David Ayer or the studio had in mind. But now that there’s been backlash to the overwhelming darkness of Batman v Superman, the studio wants to take a light touch out for a spin to see how it does. It will be interesting to see how audiences respond and how it affects the rest of the DCEU movies going forward. Will they go dark like Batman v Superman or will they be willing to crack a smile like Suicide Squad?
