It would also mean they would own the original Star Wars movie, which is the only one Fox owned outright and Disney had no claim to. So there is a lot of incentive for them to consume Fox's media, though assimilating X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU would probably be a wise long-term decision post-Infinity War and be the safest bet in ensuring longevity in that particular franchise (also we can pretend the X-ification of the Inhumans never happened).

This would also mean they get Avatar, which should make the new Disney World park in-house.

Oh Jesus. I didn't even think of that one. Disney must be stopped before Cameron's sequels become annual.

We'll get to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine. So there's that, right?

Apparently, these talks have been on and off for a while now. It seems as though Fox isn't very confident in their ability to adapt to the changing media marketplace. They've obviously got the right-wingers nailed down tight when it comes to 24 hr. "news", but their track record of late has been so filled with misses that they're cancelling out the hits. If Disney does eventually manage to acquire Fox, they would add enough movie franchises to their catalog to keep them right where they like to be- producing reliably profitable product. I do worry that Disney would spend too much time on proven franchises, and not enough on original content, though.
The most significant impact would obviously be the return of X-Men and Fantastic Four to Marvel Studios. There has been heavy speculation for a while now that the Avengers movie being released in 2019 will mark a new beginning to the MCU, be that as a complete reboot or a soft reboot. If the deal does manage to go through within the next year or so, then a complete reboot seems most likely. It would be very awkward to try and fit the mutants into the history of the MCU. Such a radical change would provide the general public with a good excuse for why Disney is choosing to start over.

I'd really rather not see this happen. I have no interest in seeing Marvel getting the X-Men back and the thought of Jackman returning to Wolverine after Logan ended his story so beautifully is also disheartening. Plus Disney getting even more of a monopoly over the film market sounds like bad news to me.

Just because Jackman is willing to return to the role for a chance to be in The Avengers, doesn't mean that Marvel Studios is willing as well. I have serious doubts that Marvel/Disney would want to have any ties to the Fox incarnations of the X-Men/Wolverine films. They might be willing to shoehorn Deadpool & Deadpool II in, since those films don't have any solid links to the other movies.

They aren't gonna merge PG-13/R the way Fox is doing.

The Genie, magic lamp and flying carpet have popped up numerous times over the years. A character from a Marvel movie showing up in another Marvel movie is hardly random.

My only surprise at this is that it took five years to break even. Disney has be licensing the hell out of Star Wars' merchandising rights. Money well spent. Was there ever a similar announcement regarding Marvel Entertainment?

Was there ever a similar announcement regarding Marvel Entertainment? The article seems to only be counting raw box office numbers and aren't subtracting for the costs of making and marketing the films and doesn't seem to be accounting for how much of that is being kept by theaters.

Was there ever a similar announcement regarding Marvel Entertainment? It isn’t an announcement from Disney. LucasFilm, under Disney, just reached $4 billion. I’m sure Disney made its money back in 2015, when Force Awakens came out, but we have no financial record to look through. This is the best we got - for now. Marvel has made $13 billion at the box office. Disney also bought them for $4 billion.
