The Graveyard Book - was a good little story. Kind of a "Harry Potter with Ghosts" I did enjoy it. It was narrated by Gainman himself - the only annoying thing about the recording was that they played Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns (one of my favorite pieces of all time) in between the chapters, but the volume wasn't always right when Gainman began to speak.
Otherwise it was a pretty neat recording

And remember, if you don't like it, I never said it was amazing.

Ok I'm going to hold off on Krampus - it hasn't drawn me in after 3 chapters, but I have hope it gets better - slow start is all.
So, I'm going back to Neil Gainman with Neverwhere

Neverwhere was good, it had interesting characters and an unusual world, but it wasn't great. I did like it though. It's always interesting when the author is also a good narrator and you get to hear the characters the way he actually wrote them. Gainman was good at that.
Krampus turned out to be a better book than I first thought - you had to get into the meat of the story first and then it got pretty interesting. I'd recommend this one to fantasy enthusiasts or anyone into mythology and folklore, the other side of Christmas - Yuletide ....or rednecks lol

I'm two thirds of the way through. It's superb so far.

I've finished "The Sword in the Stone" by T.H. White, bringing my Hugo Count to 66 of 68. Pretty boring book with a few interesting parts.
I'm now reading "The Dark Forest" by Cixin Liu, the second book in the "Three-Body Problem" trilogy.

I, too, have just started reading the Dark Forest!
I can already tell the translator isn't as good...or Liu lost something between books 1 and 2.

It feels different, but I really like it so far. Whatever issues I had at the beginning, they soon disappeared. It's riveting. I have some vivid ideas of what's to come in book 3 already. Can't wait to see where he goes with it...

I'm glad you agree, I'm about 140 pages in and this is better than the first book, so far. The Wallfacer Project is very fun and original to read about.

Ha, nice. I'm at p149 right now... And I concur with the Wallfacer stuff. I don't read a whole lot of sci-fi but this definitely feels like a fresh take on an age-old theme.

I've dreamt about writing a sci-fi story that takes a realistic approach in showing the effects of alien contact on the Earth. This is kind of nailing it.

As a writer myself, I look at passages such as this one and think how could I ever compete with that...even it's translation is on another plateau...
'Then he felt like he was standing on a towering cliff top, and the girl's eyes were the vast abyss beneath, covered in a pure white sea of clouds. But the sun shone down from all directions and turned the clouds into a brilliance of colour that surged endlessly. He felt himself sliding downward, a very slow slide, but one he could not arrest under his own power. In a panic, he shook his limbs to try to find a place to hold on. But beneath his body was nothing but slick ice. His slide accelerated, until, finally, with a burst of vertigo, he began to fall into the abyss. In an instant, the joy of falling reached the upper limit of pain.
The Mona Lisa was deforming. The walls were deforming, melting like ice as the Louvre collapsed, its stones turning to red-hot magma as they fell. When the magma passed over their bodies, it felt cool as a clear spring. They fell with the Louvre, passing through a melted Europe toward the center of the Earth, and when they reached it, the world around them exploded in a shower of gorgeous cosmic fireworks. Then the sparks extinguished, and in the twinkling of an eye, space became crystal clear. The stars wove crystal beams into a giant silver blanket, and the planets vibrated, emitting beautiful music. The starfield grew dense like a surging tide. The universe contracted and collapsed, until at last everything was annihilated in the creative light of love.'

And yeah, he hasn't disappointed with the other three Wallfacers. I mean, if this was some shit scifi movie, the other three Wallfacers would be single-minded fools who failed, or something. But just as I was hoping, none of their plans were what they seemed, and instead of Wallbreakers coming to kill them, they took them out by words. Pretty great. As a writer myself, I look at passages such as this one and think how could I ever compete with that...even it's translation is on another plateau... I'll admit, I kind of rolled my eyes at this part. Also, this storyline went the opposite way that I thought. I figured since she was hired that their love would never work out, but just like many other times in this book, I was wrong and the right answer was better and more complex. I'll talk more about what I've read later, I have to go.

I finished it up last night. Fully satisfied.
The only downside is we have to wait until April for the translation of the final book... Same week as GoT, too. Should be quite a Spring.

I have about 30 pages left. I'll finish it up tomorrow night. But yeah, it's been pretty amazing.
Only complaint is it was PRETTY damn obvious the fleet was going to get fucked up by the "probe."

But then at a certain point I think it was suppose to be obvious to the reader. Especially when the old guy, Ding Yi, started to have a bad feeling about this. Boy, I was really shocked when I finished it that...well, it almost seems over! What's the third book going to be about?
