Not technically a video essay, just a trailer mash-up I put together. Not sure if anyone else will find it funny, but it makes me laugh.

I'm no expert on Objectivism and only saw the movie once, but isn't the justification for objectivism supposed to be that the exceptional people, when left to their own devices, will create works and make investments that would ultimately benefit society through innovation and some sort of trickle down ecconomics? By contrast, isn't the idea of the movie supposed to be that when The Incredibles when left to pursue their crime fighting business/hobby without regulation are better able to help people if they should choose to do so?

I don't think the film makes the argument that the supers are better when free to pursue heroism without regulation. The film frames them as essentially government agents and this is true even at the end. The justification for objectivism, at least in Rand's work, seems to have less to do with the greater good of society and more strictly a philosophical doctrine which individuals can use to live more fulfilling lives. Randian ideals have been used to justify neo-liberal "trickle down" policies, but I think that's more about people applying objectivism to economics rather than objectivity being an economic philosophy. Either way, I still don't think it applies to The Incredibles, given that saving people is central to what the supers do rather than a fortunate by-product of their greatness.

But isn't the central metaphor of Atlas Shrugged supposed to be that the exceptional people are metaphorically holding up the world and that without encouragement to pursue their self interest they'll "shrug" and send everything into chaos? Hence the dystopia narrative about the world being plunged into a depression because of an overly regulatory government. Not unlike the world where Earth is left defenseless from the likes of Syndrome because the ungrateful public prevents The Incredibles from exorcising their pursuits as they see fit?

Fair points, but the world of The Incredibles hasn't fallen into a dystopia. Even without Supers the world is chugging along just fine. The Syndromes of the world haven't been able to conquer, and the only reason Syndrome's robot posed such a threat is because he was able to use supers as test subjects in the first place.

I made a mash-up of the intro to the James Bond movie Spectre and the Judas Priest song of the same name. I did this for two reasons.
1. Because it was fun 2. It's high time Judas Priest is called open to record a James Bond theme. They're British icons, they've been around almost as long as the Bond movies, and like James Bond, their name also starts with a J. These are all equally valid reasons.

How did you get through that whole video without using the phrase "unreliable narrator?"

How did you get through that whole video without using the phrase "unreliable narrator?" I got too caught up with phrases like "reader response theory". But yeah, pretty embarrassing oversight on my part, haha. Was the video okay otherwise?

Where's my Mission Impossible videos? I don't have too much to say about them. Maybe a hot take about how De Palma's film is still the series best.

I imagine you've probably seen both films a ton and also read a lot about both of them.

Truth be told I think a lot of people actually do get Rashomon wrong and see it more as a series of "different truths" even though (as you point out) some of those characters are clearly outright lying.

I've seen Citizen Kane, but not Rashomon. But I take it there's spoilers in this video?
