Haven’t watched the video but Fincher is notoriously a jackass to work with. SnoBorderZero had the chance to work with Fincher but turned it down after all his buddies advised him against it. |

I’m surprised Doomsday didn’t respond to this essay by posting videos of the third world country known as San Francisco. Over the past 20 years I’ve gone back and forth in the French Connection vs Dirty Harry debate, but it has become abundantly clear that both movies are tackling two different subject matters. Yes, Popeye Doyle and Dirty Harry are essentially the same character. New York vs California might separate them aesthetically but they’re the same dude. But that is where the similarities end. People complain about police brutality until they themselves need the police. It’s easy to judge Popeye Doyle cause he’s chasing down drug dealers. But if a serial killer hijacks a school bus full of children, well shit, shoot the bastard. These two movies compliment each other. I think that was Friedkin’s view as well. I can’t find it now cause Google algorithm sucks these days, but I’m sure I’ve heard the man discuss Dirty Harry. And we all know how Clint Eastwood felt since he responded with Magnum Force. |

The real Popeye Doyle didn’t recklessly chase a train and then kill his boss. And if you go beyond their inaugural films, French Connection II reinforced the themes of the original and audiences realized the ridiculousness of it. Magnum Force clarified them and Dirty Harry (the character) went on to spawn a successful franchise and influence a whole genre of 80’s action movies. You don’t get Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Gibson and Willis without Dirty Harry. Where are all the Popeye Doyle imitators? You can have the hero cop (that fights bureaucracy) without him (or her) storming into a bar and harassing citizens or carelessly saying the n-word. |
