I'm not saying the presence of a villain would have made those movies any better, but maybe at least it would've given them one more memorable element. All the good villains went to DreamWorks

I don't know, in general, they're probably smart to avoid getting too attached to any one formula that could get run into the ground over the course of a decade. You could argue that "twist villains" are a formula unto themselves, but each of these twist villains are so different in nature that it's hard to really say that. Zootopia essentially a mystery so a twist villain makes sense for it, and it mostly fit well into the themes of Frozen. Wreck-it-Ralph 1 and Moana mostly jettisoned traditional villains so they could have more time to just explore their respective worlds before getting too deep into a conflict and Big Hero 6 managed to have its cake and eat it too because it gave you this rad dude with a mask for most of the movie's runtime and still got to have a "reveal" at the end. Only one that really seemed to be missing a villain is Frozen 2 but... that whole movie probably needed a page 1 re-write.

They seem to be adopting Marvel's formula of developing the heroes more, and that's fine; it worked wonders for Moana. But also like Marvel, whatever villains they DO have nowadays seem rather throwaway. I'm just saying I miss the days of Jafar, Scar, Hades, Ursula, etc. Even Yzma in Emperor's New Groove. I think it IS possible to have more developed main characters while also putting in villains on the level of those guys.

They seem to be adopting Marvel's formula of developing the heroes more Infinity War proved that a compelling villain will take your movie to the next level. What Dracula says is right. It comes down to the type of movie. Some movies don't really need a villain - or at least a proper villain. Take Toy Story 3, for example, which is today celebrating its 10th anniversary. That movie didn't need a top-notch villain, or anything beyond a simple antagonist, because the story of Toy Story 3 isn't a battle of good versus evil. But a movie like Aladdin does need a proper villain because it is an action-adventure story and the hero needs obstacles to overcome.

Happy 25th anniversary to Batman Forever a PG Cooper video essay would have been nice, but oh well You'll get what you get and like it. I am once again talking about children's cartoons. Finally got around to this. Great stuff, man. Now that you point it out, the more developed Aladdin/Jafar relationship IS one of the reasons Aladdin remains my favorite.
As for Disney's recent turn away from traditional villains...I admit, I miss them. Growing up, one of the reasons I loved this era so much was the fact that each of these movies, sans Pocahontas and maybe Mulan, had great and memorable villains who had just as much charisma and memorability as the heroes -- maybe even more so. I'd always collect the action figures from each of these movies, and the first character I'd always get would be the villain. Hell, I even got Radcliffe from Pocahontas. I also own this cool shirt: Sure, their motivations may have been more simplistic, but the movies typically made sure the characters still left an impression on you. And much as I like Tangled, Wreck-It-Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6 and much as each villain in them has a bit more development, they lack the panache of the Renaissance villains. I love Moana and respect how it didn't need a villain, but Ralph Breaks The Internet and Frozen II both had climaxes that seemed more perfunctory. I'm not saying the presence of a villain would have made those movies any better, but maybe at least it would've given them one more memorable element. #BringBackTheDisneyVillains
Thank you! Also that shirt is indeed pretty cool.

I've actually wanted to do a video on Spielberg's 9/11 quadrilogy (including The Terminal) for the last couple months. I guess this guy beat me to it.

Naw, just skipped around for a couple minutes. Had some laughs then got bored. I can relate. Some British guy did a video (that currently has 800,000 views) and he used an IMDb review I posted in 2002 as a counter-narrative to his topic. All I could say is, why the fuck is Deexan digging through my old-ass high school era IMDb reviews. Motherfucker. I hope he gave you a credit. You should announce yourself in the comments section and drive people here.

Hey everyone. So a cool thing happened yesterday - Eyebrow Cinema passed 10,000 subscribers. You guys have been excellent about supporting my stuff for three years now and I can't thank you enough.
To celebrate the milestone, I'm going to be doing a Q&A video in a week or so. Given most of you have known me for more than ten years now (jesus), you don't really need this as an excuse to ask me questions. That said, if you do wanna ask something about videomaking or whatever else, I will answer it on video.
Thanks again for all your support. 90,000 more subs and Youtube sends me a little plaque.

Comes from the dutch word "plakken" which means "to stick." Both dental plaques and sign plaques are thin layers that sit atop surfaces.

What is a moviemaking trick that still reels you in despite repeated attempts to recreate it? Conversely, what is a common filmmaking trope that if given the chance you would lock away never to be reused for another 20 years?
