This is the first video in a series covering all 39 films in Criterion's massive Ingmar Bergman Blu-Ray set. Wow, good luck. Glad you were able to get so much material out of Crisis, that movie is... not good.

Glad you were able to get so much material out of Crisis, that movie is... not good. It's probably the worst idea I've ever had. This will take my 1000s of hours, will likely be met by mass indifference on Youtube, and is time I could spend either investing in more "Youtubey" content or investing in my academic career through seeking publication and speaking opportunities. But on the other hand, I think this'll be fun.

Crisis is Bergman's worst, but one of only two of his films I would consider truly bad (the other being The Touch).
Good luck on your endeavor, I went on a Bergman binge a couple years ago and it was well worth it.

Just a really weird thing to be created by someone as consistently brilliant as Bergman.

I found it to be tonally all over the place, and Elliot Gould's performance was so histrionic I couldn't take it seriously. It didn't help that his character was also a dominating sociopath.
Still, it's an interesting film being one of Bergman's two English language film. His other, The Serpent's Egg, is also flawed but has more going for it. Plus it begins with an opening crane shot and a bunch of extras on a fairly large set so it's neat to see Bergman go Hollywood (I think MGM made it).

Anyway, Episode 2 is live! In this episode, we look at A Ship to India, and consider the ways in which Bergman resembles the film's villain. Don't mistake that discussion to suggest The Touch is a misfire in a particularly interesting way, it isn't, it just... kind of feels more like someone imitating Bergman than the real deal.

So is this what your next 39 videos are going to be? No. I have the series divided into seven chunks of five videos and one chunk of four, for eight "seasons" total. Season 1 is completely done and each new episode will drop Tuesday. I'm not sure when Season 2 will begin, but it likely won't be until winter and will almost certainly not be the next videos to come. I have a close to final draft of a script for something else done and I've also begun tentatively drafting another project. In short, I'll be doing three more Bergman episodes over the next three weeks, then at least two completely different videos before Season 2 starts up.

Yeah, Port of Call is definitely my favorite out of the first handful of Bergman flicks.

Yeah, Port of Call is definitely my favorite out of the first handful of Bergman flicks. Of all the season 1 episodes, it's the one that opened up the most potential for different topics. I could have done the whole episode about neorealist influence, or talked about Bergman's place in the emerging golden age of world cinema, or national cinemas post WWII. Instead, I went with feminism, in tribute to Doomsday, the most woke feminist I know.

When I'm feeling the THIRST, I know the only acceptable quencher is more of that BERGMAN'S CINEMA. This time around, we look at Thirst, one of Bergman's first films to look at marriage, and specifically, how much marriage sucks. Our focus, however, is not on marriage, but friendship, and specifically that between Bergman and cinematographer Gunnar Fischer, as we analyze how Fischer's cinematography changed Bergman's storytelling. Thirst was the last of his "figuring this filmmaking thing out" movies before he started to become the Bergman we know.

I really need to watch more Bergman, it's one of the more glaring holes in my movie-watching.
How are you accessing these films? Criterion Bergman box set? Or does your university have them on hand?

The audio has seemed kind of low on the last two videos. Had to turn off my AC to hear them even with my PC audio all the way up.

You're good at this, man. Video essays aren't normally my thing, but your stuff manages to captivate.

I have the box-set. It was a good Christmas. It's also the main source of research. I'm hoping to only have to use the essays and other supplementals in the for my videos, though I might make some exceptions in the future. The audio has seemed kind of low on the last two videos. Had to turn off my AC to hear them even with my PC audio all the way up. Really? I seem to remember recording all five episodes in one sitting, but I may have had to do re-recordings that fucked with the sound. At any rate, thanks for letting me know. I'll double check that the audio for my next few videos is better. You're good at this, man. Video essays aren't normally my thing, but your stuff manages to captivate. Thank you
