I owe Jibbs a Film Club review (coming shortly now that Goosebumps is done), this will take a #2 seat on my list of things to watch in the next couple days. I appreciate that. I look forward to your thoughts. The modern Hitchcock movie wasn’t Frenzy but Sisters, Obsession, Taxi Driver, Hardcore, Blow Out, Body Double and to a lesser extent Dressed to Kill. Frenzy is just an old Hitchcock movie without the censorship. It doesn’t explore any new ideas. Point is, he was just an old fart. He could have been skinny and his movies would have been shit. I see the point your making and I do agree that Hitch probably never would have been able to keep up fully with younger filmmakers given his age, but I also think your painting a bit broadly. Frenzy may not be doing much new from a social or psychological angle, but stylistically, I think it's pretty adventurous. Yes, the filmmakers you mention would quickly take a lot of Hitchcock themes and techniques and push them in far bolder ways, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss Frenzy outright. I doubt Hitch would have been able to produce any more stone cold classics after his golden age, but I do think had he remained in better health he could have remained a top-notch craftsman. Plus, who knows? Had he been in better health, maybe he would have been more apt to keep up with modern issues. Speculation on my part, obviously, but I don't think it's totally fair to just dismiss Hitchcock as old and out of touch. I might consider doing a follow-up video at some point on this topic. I do agree that those movies do represent the last time Hitch was really relevant from a social perspective, it's a big part of why I consider Marnie part of the golden age despite some massive shortcomings, in my opinion. Don't have anything to add, but this is really good analysis. You're probably right, but would that be so bad? I'd have loved to get another ten years of expertly crafted thrillers. There's a reason why Frenzy, despite not being a particularly deep movie, is fondly remembered still, where the other three dark age films aren't. Also, given the resentment Hitchcock expressed in those quotes with Truffaut I cited, he may have also experimented with his basic techniques just to break free. Earlier, you said the experimentation of Frenzy was relatively minor - basically a Hitchcock film without the production code to deal with - but it was his only attempt at such a film. He may have pushed further with subsequent movies. Anyway, great comment. You make a lot of excellent points, some of which I don't think I'd fully considered. Thank you for saying so. It was fun to make despite how long it took.

42 minutes is the length of a TV drama without commercials and I watch those all the time, so I'll definitely check this out ASAP.

The most underappreciated director behind David Lean.

How choked would you be if you were that stunt person and that was all that was left in the film?

That high wire stunt part was good I was low-key thrilled when I saw that in the behind the scenes footage. How choked would you be if you were that stunt person and that was all that was left in the film? It's gotta sting. Actually, a lot of the behind the scenes footage made me feel bad for the stunt performers and choreographers. Some of the uncut footage of the filmed fight scenes actually showed some decent choreography, but in practice Kurzel's camera is so close and the cuts so rapid that it doesn't really come through. Shame that the hard, decent work of so many people was squandered.

Fun fact: posting this video got me banned from the Pixar subreddit. Now I'm banned from the general movies thread.

Nice video. Good luck with the Lucasfilm copyright police. Thanks. Oddly enough, this is actually my first video not to get a copyright claim against it since June.

Here's a video I stumbled across that I thought was pretty neat and Coop and Co. would dig. I've seen about half of these but the rest sound interesting.

I'm definitely on board with Un Chien Andalou and Eyes Without a Face still playing as disturbing. The ending of Freaks is also a nice piece of horror filmmaking. I disagree on The Man Who Laughs though. I like the film and the look is fantastic, but it isn't really scary at all. I'd also maybe challenge Meshes of the Afternoon. I like the movie a lot, but I recently saw it screened with a room full of 300+ first year students and it elicited more laughter than fear. But maybe that's inevitable when watching experimental works in big settings like that.

I love TAing intro to film and have had some great tutorial groups over the last two years, but I think I hate watching movies with that many first year students.
