Not bad at all for a movie that's as old as me. Shoot on film. Always. If you can afford to, sure. Not really practical for someone like me unfortunately. Or most people that aren't Christopher Nolan, Edgar Wright, and Quentin Tarantino.

1godzillafan didn’t remind me that Johnny Mnemonic took place in 2021. Johnny Mnemonic (1995)That's what they thought accessing the Internet would be like in 20 years. I saw it when it came out and was mostly bored. 22 years later and not much has changed. The plot is something about people uploading information to their brain and getting diseases because of it and corporations denying access to the cure in favor of ongoing medication. Nice social commentary, I guess, but Keanu Reeves is terrible, the action scenes are lame, the cyberpunk stuff is whatever and Ice-T is in it for no reason. I'm sure there's unintentional humor to be found, but it's 420 and I haven't gotten high yet so I couldn't tell you. Only amusing anecdote I can tell you is that when The Matrix came out I remember watching the commercials and thinking, "didn't Keanu Reeves already make this movie?" Yes, I dared to compare The Matrix to Johnny Mnemonic. In my defense, there's a scene where they upload information to his brain and he says, "I know Kung Fu." How am I not supposed to assume they're both the same shit? Anyway, gonna get high. Hit me!

I can only guess at how many times I watched Enemy Mine as a kid. In the winter time, pretty much all my friends and I did was watch movies, and Enemy Mine is one of the films we had available for free. None of us had cable, but my best friend's Grandma had it, and would occasionally give him a couple of VHS tapes with stuff she'd recorded for him. Anything that was on those tapes got played constantly.

1godzillafan Doomsday SnoBorderZeroR.I.P. Albert Pyun variety.com/2022/film/obituaries-people-news/albert-pyun-dead-nemesis-cyborg-captain-america-1235173286/CYBORG (1989)For those of us who grew up with Van Damme in the late 80's and 1990's, Cyborg was his strangest movie. People don't associate Van Damme with post-apocalyptic sci-fi movies featuring a cyborg. And the weirdest part of all is the scene where he's crucified. Seriously! But I have to admit that Cyborg has its charm. It's about Van Damme having to rescue a cyborg from an over-the-top villain and then taking the cyborg to a place where its information can save the world. The movie's budget is only $500,000 but the filmmakers found ways to make it work. The action and fight scenes are simple and well-done. The effects are cheesy but effective. The locations are mostly open spaces but they fit the story. And there's a lot of flashbacks to shift the focus away from the expensive ideas. Cyborg is not a good movie, and lots of people are gonna trash it, but it's respectable considering the circumstances.

TIME AFTER TIME (1979)H.G. Wells time travels to 1970’s San Francisco to stop Jack the Ripper and become an Eskimo brother with Doc Brown from Back to the Future. It’s a goofy movie to say the least but it wears its heart on its sleeves and we get solid performances from Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen and David Warner. SnoBorderZero, check it out.

Psssh, of course I've seen this movie. And I agree that it's a delightful film by Nicholas Meyer before he did Wrath of Khan. 7/10 from me.

AUGUST 9, 2014 03:03 AMJAMES CAMERON'S THE ABYSS (1989)25TH ANNIVERSARY Disclaimer: This is a review of the theatrical version and not the acclaimed special edition.Terminator. Aliens. True Lies. Titanic. Avatar. James Cameron has directed some of the most beloved, and successful, movies in the history of Hollywood. Then there's The Abyss. If it weren't for Piranha 2, it would be the black sheep of Cameron's directorial career. The film has been over-shadowed by behind-the-scenes horror stories which include crew members being burned by chlorine and actors so furious they punched holes in the wall. Even Cameron agrees that it's the worst experience of his career. And then when released in the summer of 1989, the movie was no match for Batman, Indiana Jones and Mel Gibson. By all accounts, The Abyss was a disappointment and its only moment of glory was winning the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. Objectively speaking, however, The Abyss is an interesting film and a standout of 1980's cinema. The problem, like in most of Cameron's work, is the screenplay. He combines two different premises and turn them into an odd couple. The first plot is an American submarine that sinks in the Caribbean and its nuclear weapons are at risk of being stolen by the Soviets. And the second plot is the discovery of aliens living in deep sea. If you haven't seen the movie, let me explain it a little better. The first half is a thriller with Michael Biehn as the bad guy and the second half is a Steven Spielberg film. Each half works exceptionally well but when combined it creates a very strange movie. Holding these two halves together and giving the film an emotional arc is the responsibility of Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. They play an estranged couple who are forced to work together and then reconnect over the course of the story.* And they're the ones who make the film work. Their performances are riveting and you go along with anything Cameron throws at the audience because of them. I think it's a disgrace that Harris and Mastrantonio were not nominated for Academy Awards. Forget the groundbreaking visual effects by ILM. This is a human story with real people and they're the reason you should watch The Abyss. B+ says Doomsday*Their characters are based on James Cameron and his then-wife, Gale Anne Hurd, who's the producer of all his 1980's output. But instead of real life imitating art, Cameron divorced Hurd and hooked up with Kathryn Bigelow. BIGELOW HASN'T AGED AT ALL.

I've only seen The Abyss one time and it was when I was like 13 or 14. I hated it. It's definitely not an opinion I'm willing to stand by at all though and should rewatch it sometime.
