I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning behind giving a movie like this to a first-time director. And ignore the fact that Kinberg has produced/wrote for this franchise for years. Why?

Because nobody else would touch something that had Singer and Ratner's sticky hands on it. It's sad that almost all the X-Men movies were directed by someone accused of rape or sexual harassment but there you go. |

Everybody working on this movie knew full well that the end was nigh. There was no reason not to kill off anyone the writers felt like taking out. I won't be a bit surprised by any character deaths. The only thing that might surprise me is if Dark Phoenix isn't a total clusterf###.
After seeing these trailers, I don't see much reason to actually watch the movie. I haven't seen this many spoilers in a trailer since Batman v Superman.

Eh, I've actually kind of liked the trailers. Everybody seems to be expecting a trainwreck -- and I myself have a few doubts -- however...so far, it looks like what we would expect from an X-Men movie.

Before the movie came out. I do recall not liking the look of Quicksilver when it was featured on one of the covers of Empire magazine. I didn't mind the story being Wolverine focused, as he was one of the main characters of the comics storyline. It's true that I took issue with it being him that was sent back in time, rather than Kitty Pryde, but it wasn't that big a deal. |

The comics and the movies don't have to be exactly the same. No, of course not. I'd say that of all the various X-Men films, the best ones are those loosely based on some kind of original source material. Specifically, X2 ( God Loves, Man Kills & Weapon X), X-Men: Days of Future Past (same), and Logan ( Old Man Logan). The movie versions of these stories have very little to do with the comics. They use some of the same themes and characters, and do something new with them that worked. While it's true that X3 was also based on comics storylines ( Gifted & The Dark Phoenix Saga), the two plots were not integrated into one another at all. A "cure for mutants" just happened to be going on at the same time as Jean gaining ever increasing power and an alternate personality. The two ideas don't work well together, and Ratner certainly wasn't up to the task of integrating them into one strong story arc. I think the Dark Phoenix Saga could be made into a quality film. I just don't feel that the story can be given the character development it deserves under the prevailing circumstances left by X-Men: Apocalypse. |

I agree. Those are the best three movies by far. And I don't hate xmen 3 as much as others, but you are right, the two stories don't mesh.
