Are people looking forward to this? It seemed to me after the lukewarm reception of X-Men: Apocalypse that this certain thread of the franchise might be wearing out its welcome.

I'm still looking forward to it, especially after reading the EW article on it. It does sound like the producers want to make up for Apocalypse which, I fully admit, I overrated way too much at first. The real question though, is will Jennifer Lawrence still look like she's not giving a shit as Mystique?

Apocalypse was pretty rank. I'm not "excited" for it, but superhero movies, both good and bad, are like a comfort food genre for me, like monster movies. I still watch them because I like watching them.

Sure, but I'm not one of them. Even if Apocalypse had been a fantastic film, I would still not be in favor of the next movie in the series being Dark Phoenix. As it is, not only was Apocalypse terrible, but it gave us a Jean Grey who's set-up was antithetical to what made The Dark Phoenix Saga great. Jean is supposed to be a bland yet beloved teammate to all her fellow X-Men. Her character is meant to be simple and predictable. What we got from the previous movie is a Jean who's already considered by her classmates to be a dangerous freak who should be avoided. The Phoenix Saga, and the subsequent Dark Phoenix Saga gave us a transformation of Jean from girl-next-door to sexy dominatrix to cosmic being who destroys entire star systems on a whim. Either Fox is going to attempt to cram all of this into one movie, which will almost certainly fail, or Dark Phoenix is nothing more than a title, in which case they are once again squandering the potential of one of the greatest X-Men storylines ever created. |
