No one told me that Tootsie was in the Criterion collection. They seem to have recently gotten an interest in re-considering the prestige films of the 80s that had sort of been placed on the back burner by the film community (The Big Chill, Broadcast News, A Room With a View, Babette's Feast, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, etc.).

The lack of Amadeus makes me question the entire company. That's one of the greatest films of all-time and most people under 30 have ignored it because they assume a movie about classical music is gonna be boring. Criterion should be exposing Amadeus to a whole new audience and generation.

You're right though, the film is not your typical plodding biopic; it's got tons of energy and charm and is the best of the 80s Best Picture winners for sure. Obviously it's acclaimed, but I agree that it maybe doesn't get as much attention these days as it should. Criterion would have all of the amazing films if they could.

My friends and I went around school imitating Scalieri's final breakdown scene for days after being shown that in Middle School.

Also, there's a perfectly good Blu-Ray for that movie already, there's not a whole lot of reason for Criterion to "save" it.

Is there any way a poor Canadian can get in on these sale prices?

December is always light for them, they put out all their heavy hitters in November for the Holiday shopping season. New Harold Lloyd though, that's always nice.

Flash 50% off sale from Criterion.com. If you also took advantage of the $10 credit gift to fans of the Facebook page, this could be a good day.

Never thought I'd see such a stuffed edition of a Coen Brothers movie. Those two don't really seem like special features and seem to insist that their movies get fairly modest releases.

I had it on order from Amazon one time and just hours later Criterion released their annual drawing that hand hints of the releases for the upcoming year. One was clearly Inside Llewyn Davis so I cancelled asap.

Hell yes on both of those. Cool to see The Emigrants/The New Land getting a decent release as well. Watched a version of that not long ago which was... compromised.

Wow, The Graduate, that's awesome and kind of unexpected. There's certain Hollywood classics you think are just gonna remain where they are and not be able to get the Criterion treatment, but this is great. I wonder if it will open the doors for others as well.

I don't even like The Graduate that much but I might pick up a Criterionized version of it.

Really? I think it's excellent. So ahead of its time and still extremely watchable today. I'd love to see them touch it up, I bet it'll look great on blu-ray once they do.
