I like this article. I do think the core problem is much deeper than Criterion and reflects a much greater historical injustice and lack of opportunity for Black filmmakers. That said, those numbers are quite low and the writers cite multiple examples of films that would fit and have thus far been excluded. One thing I appreciate though is it seems clear Criterion are taking steps to address this. The channel often highlights Black filmmakers and more movies are also getting Blu-Ray releases. Hopefully a sign of things to come. On a personal level I'd love for them to put out If Beale Street Could Talk because that movie is fantastic and deserves a bigger audience. Mark Harris also pointed out something on Twitter and that's that we shouldn't conflate historical importance to just directors. Many Black actors made prominent works before Black directors were granted the same access and those triumphs should be acknowledged too.

Didn't read the article (fucking NYT paywall) but I do wish people would stop treating the Criterion Collection like it's supposed to be some all inclusive canon that can add any title at will when it is, in fact, a physical media company that is ultimately beholden both to the availability of titles and the whims of the market. It would also behoove people making these arguments to consider 1. that the opportunities of African Americans to make any movies has been limited over the years (a fact that is much documented) and 2. that this is almost certainly going to show up in the wider film canon that Criterion has to choose from.

The 1942 cut is just something thrown together by Chaplin for talkie audiences who moved beyond silent films. It's an interesting curiosity, but the original cut is the real film.

David Cronenberg's Crash is a movie I've been, um...interested in, to say the least, for a while. If anything, like Naked Lunch, I'm curious enough to see it at least once. But I won't be blind-buying it like Naked Lunch, that's for sure.

I'm not a huge fan.

I'm aware sexuality is a running theme in his movies, though. Sometimes unnecessarily so, maybe. Like, I watched eXistenZ for the first time in July, and the sexual stuff in that one felt like it was just there cause, hey, it's a Cronenberg movie.

I've been meaning to revisit Crash and Cronenberg is too cool to pass up on. Amores Perros is fucking sweet news.

I haven't gotten around to Cronenberg's Crash but I've heard of it for a while. From the IMDb page:
After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife.
Good lord.

I mostly just like the idea of people accidentally renting it thinking it's that other Crash.

I rented it hoping it was a compilation of car crashes and I was very disappointed.

I finally watched In The Mood For Love last night. It's good, it's fine, it's another movie that made me wonder what the hell I'm missing. I get the point but I didn't come away thinking that I just witnessed this masterpiece. Maybe I should give it another go sometime but considering its reputation I came away somewhat underwhelmed.
