Gaaaaaah. You know how hard it is for me to resist posting Simpsons memes of Apu as it is. Then you go and have this conversation. Now I'm about to relapse.
You two should be ashamed of yourselves.

A good buddy of mine has been recommending for months and months that I blind buy the Apu Trilogy. I haven't watched it yet and I hesitate to blind buy a box set that's on sale for $50 but he's claimed repeatedly that 'I won't regret it.' Who can vouch for him and give me a yay or nay? I'd vouch for The Apu Trilogy. If I were doing my top 100 list again today they'd be on it. Have you tried seeing if it's available to borrow from a library? No, not a bad idea though, thanks. I'll check it out and if they don't have it I think I'll pick it up.

I'd really like Criterion to put out The Fog of War.

So was that Bergmann box set their only announcement this month? Unlikely. Bergman box is for November and we're waiting on the October slate. More than likely the Bergman thing was a special early announcement like they did with the Olympics set. As this is the first Monday after the 15th I wouldn't be surprised if there were some announcements towards the end of the work day today.

DraculaCriterion decided that they'd rather release the Princess goddamn Bride in October rather than The Circus. The Princess Bride?? October titles: The Naked Prey - October 2 Eight Hours Don't Make A Day - October 9 Shampoo - October 16 Sisters - October 23 The Princess Bride - October 30

I've been having a miserable day. Just an endless stream of things going wrong.
Somehow Princess Bride in the Criterion announcements may be thing that made me snap today.

The fuck? Princess Bride is a good movie. It does not deserve this hate.
EDIT: To be clear I'd also rather the Chaplin films, but let's not take it out on Rob Reiner.

The fuck? Princess Bride is a good movie. It does not deserve this hate. It's not that it's a "bad" movie exactly but there's no shortage of Princess Bride in the world right now and it's not a movie that needs a company like Criterion in order to get respectful treatment on home video. We're just frustrated that Criterion is using their limited slots on stuff like The Breakfast Club and Bull Durham and the like.

As for me, I hated Princess Bride as a kid and have no interest in re-evaluating it.
As for Reiner, he's the Meathead. And he directed North. That's what I'll give him.

It will immidiately become their highest selling movie in the collection. And for good reason.

I get that, but I will say Princess Bride is substantially cooler and more worthy of a Criterion release than Bull Durham. And franky is right, it should sell very well. If more mainstream stuff like this allows for them to put out art house picks and deep cuts in top form, I'd say that's a good thing.

I prefer the older bluray for Princess Bride simply because the title is written as an ambigram.

My second Criterion haul I went a little crazy and the gloves came off. I picked up Woman of the Year, Make Way for Tomorrow, The Uninvited, Kuroneko, and a Lone Wolf and Cub box set. I might get one more batch before it ends, but we'll see.

I'm more into completing my Piranha collection. I'll work on Cameron when Fox stops being assholes and releases HD discs of True Lies and The Abyss. Even by standard definition standards, those DVDs are bullshit.
The Circus before Bringing Up Baby, but I'll buy both.
Godzilla box set sooner over later, plz.

I might get one more batch before it ends, but we'll see. You’ll have to let me know how Lone Wolf and Cub is. I’ve been meaning to check those movies out for a long time. I never go absolutely nuts during these sales but I always manage to pick up a few. So far the new releases/upgrades I’ve grabbed are Midnight Cowboy, The Passion of Joan of Arc and Young Mr. Lincoln while also picking up Curtiz’s The Breaking Point and Life Aquatic. Next week I’m hoping to pick up A Matter of Life and Death which comes out Tuesday and I’ll decide whether or not I’m blind buying The Apu Trilogy. That should hold me over till November.
