I almost loved it. Almost. The beginning is a bit hectic. They jump around different planets and introduce a million characters. Also, fuck Disney. I want the damn Fox logo. I hate the way these movies start now. Anyway, once the plot settles in and we're familiar with all the characters, the movie gets really good. The actors are all great. The action scenes are fun. The music could have been worse considering the behind-the-scenes drama. Darth Vader is awesome! They totally redeemed his scenes from Episode 3. They also fixed that "plot hole" from Episode 4. Now for the bad again. Considering this whole movie is spoiled by the opening crawl of Episode 4, there really isn't any tension during the climax. The Death Star should have been a B-plot. They should have had a personal A-plot that could have given the audience some surprises and a more satisfying ending. Also, there's a bunch of cameos that are super distracting. There's also a returning character that we REALLY need to talk about. I couldn't tell if it was CGI, make-up or if Disney has enough money to bring people back from the dead. Anyway... Overall, fun movie, but the Force Awakens is better.

Hovering around a 7 for me at the moment. The overfamiliarity of both visuals and themes will soon be to the series' detriment if Disney stick with their current formula. They need to start mixing it up and quick.
That said, the 7 minute Dunkirk scene that preceded the main feature was worth the price of the ticket alone. Oh man.

I'm going to see it when I get back from vacation in a couple weeks. Does it have the same Star Wars opening and scroll or going for something different?

No title scroll? I know it's a spin off, but there should be an opening title scroll dammit!

Light spoilers
The last third of this movie is amazing... so amazing that it's making a lot of people forget that the first two thirds kind of suck. The opening is a confusing jumble of names you don't know, characters that aren't that interesting, and thematic ideas that aren't fully realized... then there's a really good battle at the end that fuses it to the main series in a lot of very satisfying fan servicey ways. There's enough there to make it worth seeing but I think overall it's kind of poorly done and frankly feels like a bit of a cash grab. Also, the CGI Peter Cushing was a very very bad idea.

the CGI Peter Cushing was a very very bad idea. Apparently, it wasn't full CGI. Guy Henry played the role and there must of been some blend of make-up and CG to pull off the effect. Princess Leia wasn't full CG either. Ingvild Deila played the role, but the effects in that case were terrible,

I didn't mind the Leia one so much, in part because it was onscreen for like ten seconds and they were able to make it work.

It totally caught me off guard. Leia looked like X-Men 3 de-aging.

I mostly agree with Drac. The finale is borderline great but the path to get there was weak. I think the script could have used a couple more passes to really tighten things up.
I also feel the film could have done a lot more to really, "go there" as far as making a "war" movie in the Star Wars world. There are glimmers of that before the 3rd act but they don't last and they're also undercut by the standard lighter Star Wars tone.

Oh man. Okay parts of this movie are so amazing, you can't help but smile. The last hour of this film is pure Star Wars.
My biggest problem with "Force Awakens" was we didn't get space battles on an epic scale, this movie delivered in that capacity for me.
When I think "Star Wars" I imagine big effects, and a great villain who is to be feared and a hero to stand up against.
This movie has so much going for it, it also has to deal with a story and characters that are stand-alone in every aspect of the film. Which stinks because I fell in love with these characters and I wish we could have gotten more movies and stories with em.
Overall, You can totally add this to your collection and it will go nicely between episode 3 & 4.
9/10

That's been your theme this year.
