It wasn't as punishingly unfunny as the first trailer but it still looks like a shitty movie. The visual effects are horrendous.

Thats a lot of very minor nitpicking.

Yeah, it's just the internet being hyperbolic and shitty. My twitter feed exploded after James Rolfe posted his video with comments ranging from "he's an asshole for judging it" before seeing it to "he's a mysoginist who just doesn't wanna see it because he hates women". I shit you not. The first argument I can sort of see (at least to a certain extent), though even he admits the movie could be good. However his basic argument is that he isn't interested in a remake of Ghosbusters and that the trailers have been awful.

I also think he raises a great point regarding people who say "This remake/reboot/sequel looks like shit" but then see it anyway. I agree. Take a fucking stand and vote with your dollar.

Anyway, back to your original question; I have no doubt that certain sexist attitudes are helping fuel the hatred toward this new Ghostbusters, but it's hardly the only reason. The film does indeed look awful and this is also a huge brand which people really love. On top of that, but unlike Robocop or Total Recall or The Thing, people have actually wanted a new Ghostbusters (I haven't but others have) which also is partially why the outrage to this is stronger than for those films. To equate the lack of enthusiasm for the film entirely to sexism is ridiculous.

So yeah, people are taking this thing too seriously. Also, who gives a shit? Worst case scenario it's a shitty Ghostbusters remake you'll forget about in six months.

Yeah, he does make some solid points at the beginning, specifically in regards to how Rolfe's reasons for disinterest do not pertain to gender, but really he's prone to making the other hyperbolic statement, that sexism has absolutely nothing to do with the online hatred and anyone who thinks that is an idiot. Also, in general The Amazing Atheist is annoying.

I think it runs deeper than many people think for a couple reasons.

1) The whole 'women in comedy' conversation is something that's pretty big right now in entertainment, at least in LA and the comedy community which I'm pretty close to. There's a big, big push to bring women into the spotlight and because the 'progressive' element (for lack of better words) is so obsessed with it they become more interested in Equality and less so in actual Quality. It doesn't matter which way you cut it, it's hard to deny that women in comedy are judged by a different standard than men. Would Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy be the A-list talents that they are if they were men? Not even close. Don't agree? Watch Amy Schumer's standup then come back here and apologize.

2) With that in mind, these same people have a vested interest in making Ghostbusters a success. It will be a victory in their battle for supposed Equality in film and comedy regardless of the actual Quality of the product (remember that Equality trumps Quality). That's why when people came out against it they immediately went to the 'misogynist' label. That's especially why they screamed louder AFTER the first trailer was released, because it was proof that the anti-Ghostbusters people were right. Since there wasn't much ground to stand on they went into 'misogynist' overload. If the movie fails for any reason, any reason whatsoever you'll see it even more than you do now. It will be branded a failure due to sexism, not because of quality. I wish I could do that, attribute my successes to myself and my failures to outside bigotry. I technically would never fail at anything which is exactly the environment the pro-Ghostbusters crowd is trying to create for themselves.

3) Wouldn't it be great to just have the 'label' in your argument arsenal though? If someone doesn't like what's going on just immediately brand them. Don't like the stunt casting of women in a comedy franchise solely to appeal to that demographic? Bam, sexist. Don't like the idea of Idris Elba as Bond because the role shouldn't solely be based on a guy's skin color? Bam, racist. Do you think Bond should stay a man and gender shouldn't be considered in regards to the character? Bam, misogynist.

I've never been a big Ghostbusters fan but I despise the idea that if someone doesn't like something they're automatically bigots. Is there SOME sexism there? Sure, but I think that's rooted less in them hating women and more because of people not liking the idea that it was recast as women solely as a marketing gimmick. I think the movie just looks like shit, plain and simple. The first trailer was an F. Not a C-, not a D. An F. I won't be seeing it and if that makes me a misogynist then you can put it on a t-shirt for me to wear.
