Notice how all the commercial sponsors ads have a male ghost buster in them...Papa John's, Progressive Insurance, ...and at least one other that I can't remember. Kobe Bryant

The movie may suck perhaps, but the disdain the film has been getting over the past few months is still mostly rooted in sexism. People dont normally get THAT upset over a remake. You're underestimating how beloved the original is.

The door swings both ways though. The pro-Ghostbusters crowd has been playing the 'sexism/misogyny' card since the cast was first announced. As it so happened the trailers were all terrible which validated the fears of the naysayers so the pro-GB people doubled down on the sexism claims. Granted, I think it's all a marketing ploy to make the film as controversial as possible (when was the last time a filmmaker and stars criticized fans BEFORE a movie came out?) but people have been screeching about sexism since the beginning and they've only gotten louder now that it's looking more and more like it's going to be as bad as everyone feared.

I honestly cannot think of any examples where fans were criticized prior to a release date. The closest I can think of is Quentin Tarantino during press for Sin City. He was asked if he would ever make his own comic book movie and he said, "fuck no. Fanboys are too annoying."

I think what I hate most about that clip is the style of the ghosts. They're just stuntmen running, jumping, and doing flips. They don't seem ghostly at all. Spirits are supposed to be scary and ominous, especially since they can't be touched or harmed. Granted, that's an assumption, that ghosts cannot be hurt. Likewise, I always assumed the proton packs are supposed to be able to wrangle and hold the ghosts in order to be trapped, not to shoot them and whip them around.
For that matter, the proton packs were always enough. They were cool on their own. I don't really understand the need for all these individual weapons so each girl is unique. A punching proton glove? The ghost chipper? Pistols? Meeeehh.

Doomsday Let's keep pretending this is about sexism. If all the backlash happened AFTER these clips came out, I would agree with you.

I came here to post the same thing. I dunno, at this point everyone seems to have made up their minds, it's either going to be an insult to the original or it will be great because womyn. I doubt the reviews, positive or negative, will be any less biased. I am all but certain however that it's not the 'movie of the summer' as one reviewer put it.

Well, it IS the most talked about movie of the summer.

Well The Heat is still sitting with a 65% Fresh score. Considering how it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen it just goes to show that sometimes even RT scores can be horribly, terribly wrong.

Regardless of how good or bad this is it's probably going to end up making bank. The Ghostbusters name is going to bring in a certain amount of money no matter what, the Melissa McCarthy name is going to bring in a certain audience, and the culture war will probably help the movie as well because the "SJWs" will see it to help the cause the the "bigots" will also see it so they can explain how much they hate it.

Hard to say. Could just be the select few out the gate, but the reviews are fairly mediocre to positive (even the bad reviews aren't really bad) for the moment.
Going to see it in a test screening on Wednesday. It would be nice to come away pleasantly surprised. Even if I do, I'm not sure I'll be able to get over the Scooby-Doo-esque style of ghosts, though, and it's very possible that could end up being the main fault I have with the film.

I'm sorry, aren't all McCarthy's movies well-reviewed? This means nothing to someone like me who doesn't like Bridesmaids.

I really liked Spy, though. I've been very back and forth with all of her movies.

She is a hit or miss for me. I think it will do fine at the box office... Will the old fans of the original like is is going to be the deciding factor

I haven't seen Spy even though I've heard good things about it, but like Bond said I also heard good things about Bridesmaids and The Heat too. I didn't hate Bridesmaids as much as I loathed The Heat but it certainly wasn't good.
And I don't usually go the conspiracy theory paranoia route but I'm convinced these good reviews are just critics going along to get along. I would bet many of them decided they were going to like the movie before they saw it and wouldn't be able to write a bad review even if they hated it. Really, how often does a movie with a totally garbage F-grade trailer turn out to be good?

She seems to be pretty hit or miss with critics as well. More misses than hits, actually. Even The Heat was more down the middle, while movies like Tammy, Identity Thief, and The Boss were all almost completely critical bombs. The only two movies of hers that have garnered overall praise were Bridesmaids and Spy. She was good in Spy, but it also helped that the rest of the cast was pretty good too.

Now Ghostbusters is sitting at a 3.7 on IMDB. I haven't seen people draw a line in the sand so deep and wide with a movie since....I don't know when.

Basically, critics hate it when her husband is the director. They prefer her collaborations with Paul Feig.
