John Carpenter, creator of the original “Halloween” films, will return to the franchise as executive producer on a new production of the iconic horror movie. Miramax and Blumhouse Productions will co-finance development and production. Producers are Malek Akkad under his Trancas banner and Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse. Miramax holds worldwide distribution rights and will determine its theatrical distribution partner at a future date. The “Halloween” film franchise was started in part by Carpenter and Moustapha Akkad in 1978, and has led to 10 films that have grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. John Carpenter said, “38 years after the original ‘Halloween,’ I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.” The news was unveiled on a new Halloween Movies web site. “‘Halloween’ is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies,” Blum said. “The great Malek Akkad and John Carpenter have a special place in the hearts of all genre fans and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give ‘Halloween’ fans the movie they deserve.” David Thwaites will oversee the reboot for Miramax with Carpenter. The original “Halloween” was directed by Carpenter from his own script about Michael Myers as he stalks and kills teenage babysitters on Halloween night. The film begins with six-year-old Michael killing his teenage sister on Halloween in 1963; he escapes 15 years later from a sanitarium and stalks Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends as they babysit. Malek Akkad is the son of Moustapha Akkad, who exec produced the original “Halloween” and produced several of the sequels, including 1998’s “Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later,” 2007’s “Halloween” and 2009’s “Halloween II.” variety.com/2016/film/news/john-carpenter-new-halloween-movie-1201781624/

And not a single mention of Rob Zombie. Won't miss that hack's awful interpretations to this series, total misfires and wastes of time.

Halloween II was fine. It's a lesser retread of the original, but it's still up there as one of the few good entries in the franchise. Halloween III is stupid, incredibly stupid, but it's better than the Zombie films and Resurrection for sure. Hell, it's better than Part 6.

That's...surprising. But it's McBride, so I'll see it.

The most unexpected movie news since George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney.

Well this franchise can only go up. Hasn't been interesting since H2O in 1998.

You fucking jinxed it. screenrant.com/halloween-reboot-danny-mcbride-sequel/The new movie is a sequel to Halloween & Hallween II. It's doing what H2O did 20 years ago. Frankly, I'm tired of this bullshit. Halloween 4 is awesome. Halloween 5 is tolerable. Halloween 6 is... interesting. Just make Halloween 7. So now we have: Halloween 1 through 6 Halloween 1+2+H20+Resurrection Rob Zombie Halloween Halloween 1+2+Kenny Powers I haven't seen such convoluted nonsense since the Evil Dead franchise.

Friday the 13th is the lesser franchise but it's more "respected" cause it's... coherent? Aside from the 2009 remake, all 10 movies are part of the same series and they even managed to successfully crossover with Freddy Krueger. Halloween 5 and 6 were bumps in the road but they should have just marched on. The Kenny Powers movie is just gonna be another slasher film. I'd rather get a Part 7 with all the supernatural mythology they set up. That would be more interesting.

That could be more interesting but, I mean, it's never going to happen. The teenagers they're going to try to sell this to didn't see all those old movies and they'd just be confused by all the weird shit. Also there is something kind of right about the main series not continuing with Donald Pleasence dying.

There should have never been a sequel to the first movie. I'm just saying I get the instinct to reboot (and H2O was essentially a reboot before "reboot" was a buzzword). The problem is that every time they find some success with a reboot they try to rush out a sequel to it and they fuck it up. That's what happened with Resurrection and it's what happened with the second Rob Zombie movie.

H2O wasn't even a good movie. It was Scream but with Halloween characters. At least Resurrection felt like a Halloween movie and gave us Busta Rhymes in his greatest acting role:

As someone who grew up with and loved the cheesy 80's aesthetic of these movie series, and how they all inevitably went supernatural, I would have been happier had they went with 7.
Resurrection is garbage.
There's some interesting stuff in the Zombie movies, but not enough to justify two.

I'm hoping this new Halloween takes place in the 80's, even if it means recasting, instead of 40 years later with Grandma Jamie Lee Curtis fighting a senile Michael Myers.

Carpenter famously had little to do with the movies beyond the third outing. But he's fully involved in this new one, so whatever Green and McBride have in mind clearly snagged his interest. The actor/writer is saying nothing yet about when the movie might be set, but if you were thinking it might somehow be a comedy based on the franchise, think again. "We're definitely going to do a straight-up horror," assures McBride. "Halloween has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. There's a simplicity and an efficiency to that first one that I think allows the movies just to be scary as hell. And so Green and I, our approach is to get back to that."www.empireonline.com/movies/halloween/danny-mcbride-talks-new-halloween/

If there's any John Carpenter movie that needs to be revived, it's not Halloween- it's They Live.
