GI Joe and Transformers wouldn’t exist without He-Man. Half hour toy commercials had the door opened to them by Reagan's deregulation, not Mattel. He-Man was just the first to exploit it, and being first is not the same as being the best. Mattel screwed up the launch quite a bit, since they didn't bother to have the toy designers coordinate with the folks at Filmation, and the creators of the mini-comics weren't communicating with Filmation either. Kids bought toys with mini-comics that explained the world of Masters of the Universe, and then when the cartoon began airing, nothing matched the comics. Sloppy. Marvel’s G.I. Joe comics were different too.

Joe comics were different too. Yes, but not radically so. The characters were less generic and the action was more intense in the comics than the cartoon. Nobody used to reading the comics would be lost watching the cartoon, though. MotU was a complete departure. The He-Man of the comics was a barbarian who lived in the wilderness. No royal family, no secret identity, no Orko. He was more like Conan or Thundarr.

You're really talking about a fairly narrow age difference though, someone born in 1985 and someone born in 1990 could easily be siblings I'm with you, I don't completely disagree but my brother who was born in 1990 would be the first to tell you that things were just a little different when he grew up compared to how I did. He and I might technically be in the same generation but some things I didn't have like the internet, a pretty big commodity, he had access to for a big chunk of his life. I always thought that if you were born in 1985 or 1986 you were the tail-end of that little mini-generation. My 1990 brother, he never dealt with cassettes, he barely handled VHS tapes, downloaded most of the music he ever listened to, in fact he hardly remembers not having a computer in the house (we got our first Gateway in 1993).

And our older siblings who were 1977/1978 were the last generation that still played Atari regularly.
My brother and sister got the original NES the first Christmas it was out on the states

Your brother never witnessed a Black Michael Jackson. And our older siblings who were 1977/1978 were the last generation that still played Atari regularly. My brother and sister got the original NES the first Christmas it was out on the states I was born in 1982 and played Atari. I played Atari too. My uncle has it. But NES/SNES/Genesis were more prominent.

After what for me has been a long and painful delay, Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 has finally been released in the US. Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato in Japan) is the first anime that many of us in Generation X ever watched, airing from 1979 to 1984. The first season storyline Quest for Iscandar was adapted into Space Battleship Yamato 2199 in 2012. This month, Crunchyroll and Funimation have at last begun to release the series legally in the US as Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Crunchyroll is showing the series with English subtitles, while Funimation is showing it with an English dub.

Fashionably late to the party,
I was born in 1961 (not 1861)
G.I. Joe was a foot tall in my day, and not some fucking baby-man! He didn't have a damn TV show, TV was BATMAN, and we also had The GREEN HORNET and Kato was Bruce Lee!
Our toys were dangerous, you could lose an eye, or a finger, you could burn yourself or even burn the fuckin house down! My brother burned the back porch to shit with a chemistry set!
It was also the space age (in more ways than one hahah), our war was in Vietnam and there were protests and riots, and yes...dirty hippies

Still haven't watched the 4K copy I just bought. I'm expecting we can still see the black splotches in Jack's makeup.
