In that case, is there a version/set out now that's most optimal? I see the one with the sandy cover with Luke on it pop up a lot in people's collections.

You can still own the original version on DVD. The 2004 DVD - I think it's that one - has the theatrical cuts as "special featurs." People complain about it because it's not remastered and the audio is from like the 80's or whatever, but it's better than nothing. I think you can rent it from Netflix.

Yeah, as far as bluray there's just the 6 movie set (the sandy one) and a set for each of the trilogies (prequel has yoda on cover, original has vader). All versions are bastardized, but its all we got right now in high def.
Disney will figure out a way to get it made though, even if Fox has the rights. They'll work something out.
But yeah, there are those versions NE said. I still have my THX version VHS box set...

I still have my THX version VHS box set... The 1995 one? That's the best version available. It's possible the theatrical cut on the DVD special features is a transfer of that.

I totally have that documentary on VHS. I got in like '95 or '96 through a cereal box promotion in conjunction with the VHS boxset that came out around that time.

Um, Um, um,...
I need confirmation. Are they really releasing this news on a Friday? If its just a lea though, maybe we'll hear something official on Monday.
If thats the case, I guess I will pass on the steelbooks in November.

I'm glad to hear it, but not really surprised. There is no reason not to release the theatrical cuts, while there are millions of reasons (in the form of dollars) to do it. This absurd story that Lucasfilm has been sticking to for years that it's impossible to release the Original Trilogy due to degradation of the footage is laughable. If a bunch of fanboys can piece an HD theatrical cut together for the Star Wars Despecialized Edition, so can Lucasfilm only better.

I've never bought any Star Wars disc for that exact reason. When the theatrical cuts are released on blu-ray I'll be the first in line.

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK QUESTION:
Considering how many times I've watched the OT I'm surprised I never noticed this....
I was watching Empire Strikes Back today while I worked out and something struck me. At the beginning of the movie when the Empire discovers the Rebels are on Hoth, Vader says 'That's it! The Rebels are there and I'm sure Skywalker is with them.' It's clear he's looking for Luke Skywalker. It even says so in the opening text crawl.
Fast forward 45 minutes....
Vader receives the signal from the Emperor. The Emperor says 'We have a new enemy...no doubt the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.' Vader asks him 'How is that possible?"
What?!? How is it possible that the guy you're looking for who happens to be named Skywalker is somehow related to Anakin Skywalker? Is that what you're asking? What are the odds that a bunch of other Skywalkers are just flying around the galaxy? Is Skywalker the equivalent of having Smith or Johnson as a surname?
Or is it just a mistake in the movie?

He could have been feigning ignorance. Remember, Darth Vader wanted Luke to help him overthrow the Emperor.

I've always figured Vader was feigning ignorance as well. It could also be that the name Skywalker is quite common, like Smith or Williams.

Maybe he thought he said "Starkiller." It can't be easy to hear in that suit.

What are the odds that a bunch of other Skywalkers are just flying around the galaxy? Is Skywalker the equivalent of having Smith or Johnson as a surname? Or is it just a mistake in the movie? Thats part of the dialogue change for the Special Editions. Originally, the exchange was more like this: Emperor: "We have a new enemy, Luke Skywalker. He could destroy us." Vader: "He's just a boy, Obi-Wan can no longer help him." Emperor: "The son of Skywalker must not become a jedi." Etc, etc, etc. Vader never acts surprised that Luke is a Skywalker. So yeah, it was a mistake in the movie, but really only in the special editions, among oh so many other things.

Reeeeeally? Man that makes sense. What a dumb thing to include haha. Here's hoping they finally do re-release the theatrical cuts.
And it took FRIZZO to answer that question. The rest of you guys really dropped the ball.
