I'm curious as to why Orci backed out on this one. I'm wondering if the studio is looking at this one as some important release due to it being the 50th anniversary plus it's now going to be competing with Star Wars. Maybe Abrahms (still producing I believe) didn't have much faith in Orci as a director? Curious to see what happens from here. Yeah. That's probably what happened.

Isn't Orci also attached to the Power Rangers reboot movie?

Isn't Orci also attached to the Power Rangers reboot movie? He dropped out to focus on Star Trek. Although... no replacement has been announced, that I know of, so it's possible he'll return.

Maybe Orci dropped out himself?

I think it was more likely he was removed than stepping down of his own accord.

If he was fired or quit, the story would have broke out by now. I remember when Sony chose The Amazing Spider-Man over Spider-Man 4, there was reports of Sam Raimi storming out of the Sony offices within the hour of it happening. So I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Paramount, Roberto Orci and MAYBE even J.J. Abrams himself couldn't agree on the project and they decided part ways quietly. The fact that Edgar Wright's name was attached to the original report means that this is something that happened a while ago.

Maybe he just wasn't as vocal about it? Who knows. He's gone. That's all that matters.

Maybe he just wasn't as vocal about it? Wasn't Orci the guy who went to the Star Trek fan site and started bitching at the fans... or was that the other guy?

I guess it's only a matter of time till he makes another appearance. He was bitching at fans only a month after "Into Darkness" was released.

Maybe Abrahms will return now that he's done with principal photography on Star Wars...

Maybe Abrahms will return now that he's done with principal photography on Star Wars... It doesn't work that way. Abrams will be on post-production for Star Wars for the next year. There's not enough time for him to prep, shot and edit Star Trek for a 2016 date. If he were Spielberg or Eastwood, MAYBE he could do it, but he's not a great multi-tasker.

OK, I don't really know the intricacies of it all. My guess is that they want this to be something very special for the 50th anniversary and Orci wasn't going to deliver.

Well... that didn't take long. collider.com/star-trek-3-roberto-orci-comments/Roberto Orci Comments on Leaving STAR TREK 3 Director’s Chair; Says He Will Remain “Very Involved”Last week, we learned that Roberto Orci was stepping down as the director of Star Trek 3, and I greeted this news with cautious optimism. On the one hand, it seems like Paramount came to its senses in not letting a guy who hadn’t even directed a YouTube short film to take the reins of a major blockbuster, although previous reports say that the script was the big problem, not his glaring lack of experience. However, it’s not like he was kicked off the lot or even off the project. Orci confirmed his continuted involvement on the website Trek Movie, and also commented on the rumors regarding the script and the current status of the film. Hit the jump for more. Star Trek 3 is currently scheduled to open in summer 2016. In the comments section on Trek Movie, Orci told fans, “I will be very involved:)”, and never has a smiley emoticon been so threatening. I’ve made my feelings clear on Orci’s involvement in the franchise, and if I’m taking him at his word, it’s discouraging to hear that he’ll still have sway, especially since it’s been rumored that he was able to weasel his way into the director’s chair by implying that he would undercut any other director. Orci reassured fans that the movie will still be out on time, and that they’re currently searching for a director, although he didn’t confirm if Edgar Wright was on the studio’s shortlist. And as for the rumor that the script, which will now be scrapped, involved time travel, Orci says “no time travel was ever considered, fyi”, and I suppose that’s fine. I would honestly settle for a script that made sense, didn’t parasitically latch on to a more popular film, and wasn’t a Truther movie. That would be nice, but as long as Orci is in this movie’s orbit, I’m not boldly going for the next Trek.

Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise) and Duncan Jones (Moon) are in talk to direct Star Trek 3 (or XIII). Rupert Wyatt is the frontrunner.

It's good that he still knows how to make everyone angry even after leaving a project. I'm hoping the extent of his involvement is him standing in the room with his mouth shut.

Even the Fast & Furious guy? Does it really matter? Is that a passive-aggressive comment towards J.J. Abrams? Anyway... Let's be logical about this. Duncan Jones is still working on World of Warcraft. He doesn't have time to prep Star Trek for a 2016 release. Daniel Espinosa is working on the Boston Bomber movie. And, Morten Tyldum has no Hollywood experience. His entire filmography is Indie movies from Europe. So this race is between Rupert Wyatt and Justin Lin. So let me ask you again. You sure you want the Fast & Furious guy?
