It's hard not to be depressed about the state of moviegoing when every adult oriented movie is eating shit at the box office but the next superhero movie still makes bank. The excuse of "well it's a pandemic" holds little weight when Spider-Man is still gonna make a shitzallion dollars.

The excuse of "well it's a pandemic" holds little weight when Spider-Man is still gonna make a shitzallion dollars. The sheer number of screens Spider-Man is eating up is a big part of it. My local 16 screen theater is showing no fewer than 31 showtimes for the damn thing (all sold out), meaning it's showing on something like 8 screens. Nightmare Alley is tucked away in a smaller auditorium, WSS is still on two screens, Encanto is still playing on two screens even though it's going to be on Disney+ in less than a week, and Eternals is still playing twice a day. Note that every single one of the movies I've named are on some level releases by the Walt Disney company (or a Sony movie that Disney is taking a big piece of). Only non-Disney movies they're showing are House of Gucci and Ghostbusters.

And while No Way Home makes 120 million dollars movies like West Side Story and Nightmare Alley pull a measly 1 million each. A world where only superhero movies make money and Disney seems actively disinterested in marketing anything else fills me with despair. Especially since it's not like West Side Story or Nightmare Alley are esoteric ruminations on existence. They're genre movies. The former is an exuberant Old Hollywood musical made by a director even the most general of publics know is a reliable hand, the latter is a twisty conman movie with a star-studded cast (from a director whose last movie was a Best Picture winner which grossed almost 200 million worldwide). I like superhero movies, I like most Marvel movies, but when almost nothing else can find a foothold with audiences it's hard not to be a little despondent.

I gonna find a way to watch Nightmare Alley tomorrow. I wouldn't have otherwise, but I agree with Coop in the despair.
It's amplified that the blockbuster movies will inevitably be geared towards a younger more risk-averse and generally more Neanderthal crowd. The stupid shit people were clapping at in NWH may have knocked it down a number in my 0-10 ranking.
The amount of people in the Binge Mode groups I frequent that think the Raimi movies are the worst of the Spider-Man movies is not insignificant.
The youths are a menace, and must be stopped.

I like superhero movies, I like most Marvel movies, but when almost nothing else can find a foothold with audiences it's hard not to be a little despondent. But, let’s be real, even without the pandemic, I still think a remake of West Side Story was never going to light up the box office. Even one directed by Steven Spielberg. As for Nightmare Alley, that’s tougher to say. Now, I totally get your perspective and fear for what Spider-Man’s and (ugh) Venom 2’s success could mean down the line for adult oriented movies, but the bottom line is that these movies are showing that audiences are still willing to turn up to see movies in theaters, and as a lifelong movie fan, I can still take comfort in that. On that note, my experience seeing No Way Home on Friday was a pleasant reminder of why I love going to the movies in the first place. It was a nearly sold-out audience (at a 1:30 matinee, no less), all of whom were INTO IT and the energy fed into the overall experience. It was an EVENT, and I really do value these kinds of movie experiences. I didn’t participate in all the whooping and cheering that happened throughout, but I’m not gonna lie, I enjoyed that aspect of the screening and the movie supported/justified it. So, yes, I love me my well done Marvel and other superhero movies, would rank No Way Home among my favorites of the year so far, period, alongside adult-skewing fare like The Last Duel and Last Night in Soho, and I also make sure to support films like West Side Story and (pretty soon) Nightmare Alley. But I’m choosing to look at it from a glass half full perspective: people are coming to the movies, and ENJOYING going, and that’s awesome, especially now.

Truth be told, I'm not sure there's anyone to really be angry at. The theaters need to do what they have to do to meet demand, audiences aren't exactly crazy for wanting to see NWH (Spider-Man is cool after all), and Sony/Disney aren't exactly doing anything underhanded here.

But, let’s be real, even without the pandemic, I still think a remake of West Side Story was never going to light up the box office. I agree. That's part of my point. That this isn't just rooted in the pandemic but reflects a larger trend of indifference towards mid-budget adult fare in the theater and this notion that the only movies worth seeking out are big tentpoles you don't want spoiled for you on the internet. And seeing it happen over and over again all year is draining. "Well of course In the Heights flopped, it isn't based on a recognizable IP." "Well of course The Last Duel flopped, who wants to see a movie about rape?" "Well of course Last Night in Soho flopped, it's too weird and artsy for mainstream audiences." "Well of course Nightmare Alley flopped, it's too dark for the holiday season." I don't doubt Spider-Man is a fun time, and more so at the theater. I'll probably enjoy it, I certainly liked the other two well enough. And I don't begrudge the people who went out to see it as soon as possible with immense excitement (you know my ass will be doing the same in March when The Batman drops) it's just disappointing to see almost everything that isn't a $200 million dollar tentpole met with complete indifference time and again. I'm not mad at anyone, certainly not you PhantomKnight, but watching the colossal gulf between Spider-Man and everything else does make me a little sad.

Nightmare Alley bombed? I can kind of understand why, if you had no idea what the movie was about I don't think the previews helped. You see some shots of the carnival, Cooper in a tux, some weird shots of buildings on fire and while the directing/acting lineup and source material are making me want to see it I don't think it's getting people in general on the hook to want to see it which is disappointing. Marketing may have been an issue in this case.

IDK, from my perspective, there was no shortage of advertising for any of these movies, or at least no less than the ordinary. I saw the West Side Story trailer in front of damn near every movie and stars have been making the usual talk show rounds and whatnot and I've seen TV ads. Hell I've probably seen way more advertising for it than Spider-Man, which maybe says more about my own media consumption and how good they are at targeting these days. Nightmare Alley had it rougher, that release date was clearly a bad choice but it doesn't exactly feel like sabotage, just kind of an honest bad decision.

Spider-Man: No Way Home left the pandemic in the multiverse and grossed an astounding $253M domestically and $587M worldwide in just one weekend of release. When asked for comments, YouTuber PG Cooper angrily opined, “what about Nightmare Alley?!.” I don’t know what a Nightmare Alley is and how you’d cure that disease so let’s get back on topic. Kevin Feige has rescued cinema and that should be celebrated. Great job by Richard Donner’s former assistant. To think, PG Cooper couldn’t even give us a video essay on Lethal Weapon this Christmas. What an asshole! I hope he stays out of Tim Horton so people don’t catch any Nightmare Alley. Joining the webslinger is Kingsman on Tuesday, Sing 2 and Matrix on Wednesday and Dracula’s highly anticipated American Underdog on Christmas Day. There’s something for everyone this holiday break. But we all know who’ll rule supreme… and it ain’t Evil Dead Doctor Strange…
