Think dunes week one take domestically eclipses the early returns from this weekend? HBO Max will be a factor here that it isn't overseas, so I'm guessing no.

Doomsday and SnoBorderZero are going on strike while the iron is hot. No Time To Die, the final entry in Daniel Craig’s 15-year tenure as James Bond, opened internationally this weekend to $119 million. Here in the States we were treated to Tom Hardy’s franchise hopping Venom sequel. It opened to $90 million. Man, 12-year-olds really love Venom. Is this the new Transformers? PG Cooper will surely not investigate this in is video essay series that no one watches. Addams Family 2 opened to $18 million. Shang Chi crossed $200 million domestically. The Sopranos’ origin movie made $5 million. Opening next weekend is Austin Powers 4.

Hoping word of mouth saves Last Duel, or the Oscars ignores the box office reception. It's so great. I showed my wife the trailer, she's in. Will report back after this upcoming weekend. Fair warning - while the rape scene isn't graphic, it is visceral. And you see it twice.

In an ideal world, The Last Duel would switch box office with Venom 2.

Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed and awards buzzed remake of West Side Story failed to gain any traction with audiences. In the “calm before the storm” of Marvel and Sony’s highly anticipated release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spielberg’s Boomer-based musical grossed $10.5 million. Yikes! The movie is dead on arrival. With Spider-Man, Sing, Kingsman and the Matrix coming out within the next week and a half, expect West Side Story to vanish from movie screens. Maybe should have taken the Licorice Pizza approach and opened small and then expanded after the new year.

Where were all these people earlier in the year? If anything Covid should be scarier than ever what with the Omicron variant and yet the auditoriums for this thing are totally packed.

I'm putting my foot down and waiting until theaters are half-full again. Honestly, if they were still doing the $30 Disney+ thing I probably would have taken them up on it this time. I'm probably just going to do Matrix Resurrections on HBO Max.
