And he's shown to do decently internationally... Why would they give him money to create a war film firmly based on America's history?
Greatest salesman of all time. Has to be.

Well, I for one think giving an American WWII film to a director from Germany was a stroke of brilliance.

NeverendingPlaying with Fire is in a tight race with Midway and Charlie's Angels for second place, each with about 8.5 million. While Midway and Angels are both bombing pretty hard, Playing with Fire is the true champion of the weekend.

Emmerich specializes in disaster movies, but I don't think this was the kind of disaster he had in mind. Lion's Gate will make back the money they spent on marketing Midway at the box office, but little more. They'll be able to break even on whatever deal they struck with Emmerich by the time they've sold the broadcast rights over the next few years. I doubt it will ever reach profitability.

Lionsgate is only the distributor. The film was funded by foreign investors. I’m sure it’s already paid for. Between whatever Lionsgate paid and whatever percentage they get from box office, blu ray and streaming, they likely recouped their cost. Lionsgate lost money but not too much. It’s a disappointment but not a disaster.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens to $175 million. To put that into perspective, Force Awakens opened to $247 million and Last Jedi to $220 million. Rogue One opened to $155 million and Solo to $103 million. Doomsday calls this, “watch Kathleen Kennedy destroy Star Wars in 4 years.” Thank God for The Mandalorian. Am I right? Remember when PG Cooper said Alice in Wonderland, the movie that kick started Disney remaking all of its animated films into live action, wasn’t influential? That shitty ass Lion King remake opened to $191 million. The Lion King - The Lion King! - had a better opening weekend than Rise of Skywalker. Let that sink in, IanTheCool. Kathleen Kennedy is done. Done! They’re gonna put Jon Favreau in charge. Watch. Watch! Remember in 2012 when I said Jon Favreau should direct Episode 7 and Dracula called me crazy? Vindication, motherfucker. But it’s not all bad news for LucasFilm. Universal is a bigger trainwreck. They make LucasFilm look great in comparison. Whoever green lit that Cats movie is getting fired. Happy Holidays, SnoBorderZero. Here’s your pink slip. Cats opened to a disastrous $6.5 million. This was supposed to be the “counter-programming” for Star Wars. Hilarious! Once again it’s up to The Rock and the Jumanji franchise. It was #2 this weekend with $26 million. It’s 2-week total is at $101 million domestically and $311 million worldwide. Rise of Skywalker is at $373 million worldwide. Opening on Wednesday, Christmas Day, are Spies in Disguise, Little Women and Uncut Gems.

175 million. What a failure. This trilogy went from $247M to $220M to $175M. That means demand went down. Rogue One did really good, maybe exceptional, for an initial spin-off riding on the success of Force Awakens, but Solo outright flopped. The franchise is on the verge of fizzling out, which is the last thing anyone expected 4 years ago.
