Its been a while since Doomsday got excited about movies flopping. Let’s reignite the passion. Godzilla: King of the Monsters ( 1godzillafan) looks to be taking a nosedive this weekend. It’s starting to get outgrossed by Rocketman, a movie it opened opposite. Will Rocketman have enough legs to surpass Godzilla’s tally? It’ll be embarrassing if it does. Dark Phoenix, meanwhile, is getting demolished by the two new releases (MIB and Shaft) as well as family favorites Aladdin and Secret Life of Pets. Godzilla may at least reach $100 million domestically but the chances of that happening for Dark Phoenix are slim.

In 75 years if we consider Godzilla: King of the Monsters a staple in world cinema I'll come back here and eat my words.

Kane struggled to get distribution due to Hearst suing people, but the movie did well in the theatres it played at probably due to free publicity.

Toy Story 4 opened to $118 million, supposedly a “disappointment”.
Next weekend the toy theme continues with Annabelle Comes Home

That doesn't seem like much. Perhaps... but if Lion King makes $300 million in the U.S. and $200 million in China, that’s $500 million from just two countries. Disney, I’m sure, is comfortable that Lion King will be another top-earner in spite of its reviews. They, right now, have the top 5 movies of the year. With Lion King this week and then Frozen 2 and Star Wars later this year, we're gonna see an unprecedented Disney dominance at the box office. We have Hobbs & Shaw, IT and Jumanji as the only movies remaining this year that can challenge Disney. Maybe Joker too. Maybe. Pretty crazy when you think about it. Other studios have lost the ability to make hits. Warner Bros has been a trainwreck. Universal has nothing besides Fast & Furious/Minions/Jurassic. Sony has Jumanji... for now. I’ll be curious to see the state of Hollywood in 10 years. It wasn’t long ago that Disney was the laughing stock that gave us John Carter from Mars.

Disney still has Frozen 2,Lion King, and Star Wars 9, so if you count Spider-Man as basically a Disney success they could end up with eight of the year end top ten.

And they own Fox which has Ad Astra and Spies in Disguise later this year. Not saying either will be blockbusters but crazier things have happened. And Maleficent 2 could broke out. It’s the only major family movie for 5 weeks.

Disney won't see a dime from Spidey, so I wouldn't count it. Regardless, they're still going to break a bunch of their own records again and it will likely be their biggest year yet.
