The Lion King opened to $185 million but the real news is that Endgame finally surpassed Avatar. Doomsday was reached for comments and all he had to say was:

So Disney has now broken its own record (from 2016) for the highest grossing studio of the year... as of this month. The record they are going to hold overall for 2019 is going to be massive.

If its any consolation to Hollywood, Disney's absolute domination of 2019 is something of a perfect storm and I don't know that the same thing is going to happen every year.
Right now their 2020 slate is as follows:
Onward 3/6/20 Mulan (2020) 3/27/20 Black Widow (2020) 5/1/20 Artemis Fowl 5/29/20 Soul 6/19/20 Jungle Cruise 7/24/20 The One and Only Ivan 8/14/20 The Eternals 11/6/20 Untitled Disney Animation (3D) 11/25/20 Cruella 12/23/20
There's some big stuff in there, make no mistake, most other studios would kill for that lineup. However, Black Widow and The Eternals definitely aren't making as much as Endgame and Captain Marvel, Mulan and Cruella aren't going to make as much as Lion King and Aladdin, those Pixar movies could be breakout hits but they probably won't make as much as Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2.

Remind me to look at this in December 2020.

I think Untitled Disney Animation 3D is going to crush it. Move over Endgame.

They'll continue to have silly successful years for some time to come, but yeah, this particular record is not going to be broken again for quite awhile. They could be the ones who eventually break it, but the fact that they took the new record as of July with more heavy hitters still waiting in the wings is absolutely nuts.
But who knows? We'll have to see how these new Star Wars and Avatar movies pan out. Plus the new slate for the MCU and how they build up to the new Avengers movies.

Just remarkable how little competition there has been for Disney.

Just remarkable how little competition there has been for Disney. It’s your civic duty to go watch Hobbs & Shaw. IMAX 3D. Full price. None of that $5 Ticket Tuesday nonsense.

Please - you know I'll do my part. Patiently waiting for Thursday night Dolby tickets to go on sale. But I'm a list so dunno if they actually pay full price to the studios.

Good Boys #1 this weekend with $21 million. It is only the second original IP to debut on top in 2019 and the first R-rated comedy in three years (!!!) to do so. Dire times, Doomsday. Opening on Wednesday: Ready or Not Angel Has Fallen on Thursday

Dracula’s favorite movie of the year, Hustlers, opened to $33 million. $7 million less than IT’s second weekend. Although, Hustlers had a higher per-theatre average. $10,000 to IT’s $8,000. Studio STX gonna be rolling in with those stacks of 1 dollar bills. Opening next week is Ad Astra, Downton Abbey and Rambo. Something for everyone! College Snob PG Cooper gets his artsy sci-fi. Grandpa Ramplate gets his Downton Abbey. And drunk uncle Doomsday gets his Rambo. Remember to meet up at the Food Court afterwards.

Grandparents across the nation (and Canada) left their nest to go watch Downton Abbey, the #1 movie this weekend with $31 million. Pseudo-Intellectual college students weren’t far behind as Ad Astra landed at #2 with $19.2 million. Not bad for the Disney-owned property but I’m sure the Mouse is now thinking how much it’ll cost to purchase Downton Abbey. Rambo: Last Blood is standing right behind Brad Pitt, sniffing his neck, with a $19 million gross. Be on the lookout for actuals on Monday as Ad Astra and Rambo might swap positions.
Opening next weekend is DreamWorks’ Abominable.
