My plan is to wait for every filmmaker in Hollywood to bite the dust due to box office bombs or rape allegations. I work my way in, hire all you guys and rub our collective success in Mirko's face. Hmmm, somehow I don't see Frizzo the Clown lasting long in Hollywood in this climate.

Justice League opened to $96 million. And like that , we say farewell to Zack Snyder. Its been a good year for Doomsday . Michael Bay and Snyder had flops. Brett Ratner was publicly exposed as a sex predator. There’s a lot to give thanks for this Thursday. Opening on Wednesday is Pixar’s Coco. Holy Shnikes! Justice League reportedly had a production budget that ballooned to $300 million after all the re-shoots were complete. Tack on another $100 million for marketing, and WB is in a world of pain. From what I've heard, the product placement for Justice League to offset the production costs is nowhere near the same level as Man of Steel. Just some clothes, watches/jewelry and cars.

Pure hubris. They almost certainly had dozens of people telling them exactly how much they were fucking up in trying to replicate the Marvel formula without putting the legwork in and they just didn't listen while drooling over the prospect of making Avengers money.

I don't think WB can make up for the loss with merchandising, either. They just don't sell that many toys on the back of these movies. Toys based on superheroes don't require an overblown cinematic spectacular to sell. All kids need to encourage them to buy action figures is a cartoon to watch before or after school. Besides, Spider-Man toys sell more than all the other superhero toys lines combined.

True, but is there anything about Justice League that makes it stand out when it comes to merch?

Pixar’s Coco has made $71 million since opening on Tuesday. It pretty much killed any momentum Justice League had. That movie has grossed $171 million in two weeks. For comparison, Wonder Woman had made $206 million in the same period.
Opening next weekend is.....
.....
The countdown to Star Wars begins!

Opening next weekend is..... ..... The Disaster Artist and The Shape of WaterEven with the week of Thanksgiving going for it, Justice League dropped by 56%. It probably would have been a 65% drop if people had actually gone to work last week. I've gotta wonder who is going to take the fall for this one. So far, it seems to be getting scattered across Joss, Zack and the suits at WB pretty evenly, but will that last? When a movie loses over a hundred million dollars, somebody's probably getting fired.

Who got fired for Blade Runner? If I had to venture a guess, it would be whichever studio exec made the bonehead decision to spend $150 million on the sequel to a movie that only film and sci-fi geeks enjoy or understand. The original Blade Runner failed to perform at the box office for a reason. If WB had spent $50 million on Blade Runner 2049 with limited marketing, it would have made the same amount of money.

The same could have been said about Mad Max though, which was also basically a cult franchise before Fury Road came along and rejuvenated it. It's not an exact one to one, those old Mad Max movies were based on simpler pleasures than Blade Runner was, but ultimately it made sense as a precedent. Also, the foreign market kind of sort of saved Blade Runner 2049. It made $163 million internationally, combined with its $90 million domestically. I'm sure the usual Hollywood accounting line would be that this isn't enough, but it's still not a complete disaster.

Mad Max has always been full of action, fast cars, explosions and violence. These are things that the average moviegoer usually enjoys. Blade Runner is a thought provoking look at what it means to be human in a world where the line between natural and synthetic life has become blurred, which is not something the typical person wants to deal with on a Saturday night.

Doomsday must feel great knowing that Geostorm is no longer the black sheep at Warner Bros. After 3 weeks of release, Justice League hasn't even made $200 million domestically. This shit gonna end up making less money than Man of Steel. 2 weeks till Star Wars. Ya'll ready?

It was. Man of Steel rocks. What precisely about Man of Steel "rocks"? The cast, the action scenes, the score, the special effects, the story outline, the cinematography, the editing, the general sense of grandeur... The DCEU was off to a good start before they decided they were going to copy the Marvel formula in the most backwards and half-assed way possible.

Man of Steel is a bold, interesting and exciting superhero film that takes the Superman mythos down bold, interesting and exciting avenues. As fun as the Marvel movies can be, Man of Steel goes the extra mile and puts real weight behind all the spectacle.
