With an opening this poor, maybe this will finally be enough to get Paramount to wake up and realize that they can make more money on Transformers without Bayhem. The foreign market is going to be reliable for this franchise, as long as it's full of action-packed Transformers goodness and explosions. They don't care about the story. The English speaking audiences aren't as willing to put up with the nonsensical excuses for a plot that Bayhem uses anymore. The studio gets to keep 90%-95% of the US box office during the opening week. That has the potential to make a massive amount of money, and it's being thrown away for no reason. The studio doesn't get to keep nearly as much of the overseas box office, unless that country was involved in the production. As far as I'm aware, China wasn't directly involved this time, so Paramount will only be getting 25% of the take from them this time around. If Bayhem changes his mind yet again about returning to the franchise, Paramount should say NO! Bay is done. The next Transformers is a Bumblebee spin-off set in the 80's.

I think Bay should keep making them... it keeps him too busy to ruin other franchises that I actually care about.

If Pain & Gain and Benghazi are any indication, we know where Bay is headed. Expect more conservative-leaning action movies. American Sniper proved there was a market for that. Bay just needs the right subject matter. Body builders and tired news stories was not it. Peter Berg is going through the same thing. Oil spill and Boston bombing didn't work either.

He only has two franchises because he's dedicated the last ten years of his life dedicated to robots that turn into cars. As soon as he's unemployed he's going to be on the hunt for another franchise to pay his bills in-between awful passion projects.

Sony would be crazy not to offer Bay the vacant slot, and Bay loves to play it safe. Bad Boys 3 is as safe as it comes, for him.

Paramount Pictures is going through a $#!+storm this year. Monster Trucks, Rings, Baywatch, Ghost in the Shell, XxX III, and Bayformers 5 is what they've had so far, and it's not getting much better. The only movie that looks as though it stands a chance in hell is God Particle, which is a sci-fi/horror movie under the Cloverfield banner.
Despite Bayformers 5 being in the top ten for the year worldwide, it still doesn't appear to have broken even yet. Even the Chinese market isn't as enthused as they were last time. About $100 million less enthused. With or without Bayhem at the helm, expect Transformers 6 to have a sequence filmed in China with a popular Chinese performer.

Def put a tentpole flick you paid 180 mill for up against one of the skilled auters of our time doing what looks to be his most oscar worthy film.
But fuck it besson says he already is writing the sequels. Guy doesn't lack for confidence.

I'm assuming not well, but I'm excited for it. Early reviews suggest the opening sequence is something to see.

Valerian looks like it's on track to be a cult hit amongst a certain kind of science fiction fan and a massive bomb amongst "normal" people. I think it's targeted a bit more a Europe where the comics it's based on are a bigger deal.

I wish Emoji was doing worse, but it was nigh impossible for that steaming pile of crap to fail. It only cost $50 million to produce, and I'm sure product placement was enough to ensure that bill was already paid before the first ticket was sold. All they've got to do is pay for the marketing before clearing a profit, and I don't think Sony spent much.

The bubble popped. After hits in February, March and April, the box office has declined in a period when it's supposed to be at its peak. Guardians and Wonder Woman did good. Spidey did okay. Baby Driver and Dunkirk were profitable. Everything else... cue the life support.
The Dark Tower was #1 this weekend with $19.5 million. Ouch.
Opening next weekend is Annabelle: Creation.

Only way to salvage Columbia/Tri-Star is by wiping the slate clean. Movies like Ghostbusters and The Dark Tower were in development long before the collapse of 2014. They need to start fresh and make more Baby Driver's and less Emoji Movies.

Every success by Sony Pictures is undercut by a failure or two. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was a huge success for them this year, but Underworld: Blood Wars and Life under-performed. Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back was an overseas hit, but then there's Rough Night and Passengers.

Annabelle: Creation brought some life to the box office, making $35 million. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman reached $400 million and Spider-Man: Homecoming reached $300 million.
Opening next weekend are The Hitman's Bodyguard and Logan Lucky.

Does anyone know what, if anything, Paramount Pictures gets a piece of when it comes to merchandising rights for Transformers, as opposed to what Hasbro keeps? I suspect Paramount only gets a cut from the merch that features the movie versions, but even then, how much could it really be? I was at Target earlier, and their Transformers section of the toy isle had three different Transformers toy lines! There were movie toys, cartoon toys and G1 based toys, and there were far fewer movie toys than either of the other two.
If Paramount didn't get a hefty piece of the merchandising profits, they lost money on The Last Knight. That POS has finally petered out at $594 million in ticket sales. At a production cost of $217 million, with another $100 million in marketing, there's no way Paramount cleared a profit on pure box office.
