Opening on Friday.......... damn.......... nothing of significance opens until Guardians of the Galaxy. What? Free Fire looks great! I won't deny that Fast 8 is going to crush it like a bug, but I know what I'll be going to see next weekend.

Also, having just finished reading The Circle, if they do it justice, that movie should be damn good at the very least. Best book I've read in a while.

The Fate of the Furious has already reached $900 million worldwide, possibly a billion once all updates have come in. Who can we thank or blame? China, of course. The movie has grossed over $200 million over there, over $500 million from all other countries combined and here in America its made $163 million. Over 80% of its success is coming from overseas. Meanwhile the James Bond franchise, the former global darling, remains dormant, waiting for a distributor and for Daniel Craig to finish scratching his balls.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opens in two weeks.

On this Mother's Day weekend, King Arthur was no match for Star Lord. Clearly, mom's want someone who can please the soul and the vagina. Guardians 2 made $63 million while King Arthur flopped with $14 million. Guardians 2 is at $246 million domestically, making it the 2nd highest grossing movie of the year so far. Opening on Friday is ALIEN COVENANT! Guardians 2 and Alien 6 in theaters at the same time. Sci-Fi action/adventure/comedy and Sci-Fi horror. Jibbs hasn't masturbated this intensely since Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus released music videos on the same day.

Final numbers are in.
It was a close one.
Alien: Covenant opened with $36 million (not great) while Guardians in its 3rd week made $34 million. Guardians has grossed $300 million domestically and over $700 million worldwide.

Pirates currently has 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. How disappointing, I was kind of looking forward to it.

Pirates grossed $62 million this weekend That's a huge drop from six years ago. I suspect Memorial Day will help to make up for the shortfall, but it's a pretty clear sign that the US audience isn't as interested anymore. I don't see how Disney justifies spending over $300 million on a movie like this. It makes sense with properties like Star Wars and Marvel, since those films not only generate money at the box office, but on store shelves as well. The amount of merchandising for Pirates movies is minimal, and they don't even have product placement to fall back on.

As much as a fan as I still am of the Pirates movies, even I always figured Dead Men Tell No Tales was going to open lower than the first four, cause while there was still enough interest back in 2011, I really didn't sense much enthusiasm apart from me and Neverending leading up to this one. The production budget of this fifth movie was reportedly $230 million. If the plan really WAS to make more, you have to wonder if that's still the case, and that may make the post-credits scene in Dead Men Tell No Tales potentially pointless.

I suspect they'll continue to make Pirates movies, but they'll be lowering the production budget to a more reasonable level. The worldwide marketing budget will likely stay the same, at around $100 million. Baywatch looks to be having a well deserved bombing at the box office. It's a shame they weren't able to open in China. If memory serves, Baywatch was the #1 TV show in China for ages back in the day. They'd probably really go for a movie version, but only EVENT level movies make it into China these days, unless they include some kind of positive involvement.

The season three theme doesn't compare to the season one version. The seventies really knew how to do an intro.

#1 movie is................................................ Wonder Woman! It made $57 million. Domestically, it has grossed $205 million. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise is no Brendan Fraser. The Mummy disappointed with $32 million. Internationally, however, it has made $141 million and counting. That's 81% of its worldwide gross. This weekend there's something for everyone. Cars 3 for PG Cooper and PhantomKnight. Rough Night for Doomsday. And for Dracula...

With an opening this poor, maybe this will finally be enough to get Paramount to wake up and realize that they can make more money on Transformers without Bayhem. The foreign market is going to be reliable for this franchise, as long as it's full of action-packed Transformers goodness and explosions. They don't care about the story. The English speaking audiences aren't as willing to put up with the nonsensical excuses for a plot that Bayhem uses anymore. The studio gets to keep 90%-95% of the US box office during the opening week. That has the potential to make a massive amount of money, and it's being thrown away for no reason. The studio doesn't get to keep nearly as much of the overseas box office, unless that country was involved in the production. As far as I'm aware, China wasn't directly involved this time, so Paramount will only be getting 25% of the take from them this time around. If Bayhem changes his mind yet again about returning to the franchise, Paramount should say NO!
