Which does what for the Christain crowd and the teenage girls looking for a movie targeted at both them? Are they not allowed to go to the movies or are you saying they need to choose between the more-violent-than-usual superhero film and the R-rated horror film? Either way, neither movie flopped. The Shack was budgeted at $25 million while Before I Fall only cost $5 million, and both movies hit their bullseye this weekend. In fact, The Shack overperformed compared to what was expected and Before I Fall nearly matched it's budget. Both films were solid performers for their respective studios.

And how much money they spend on marketing and distribution? How much money they splitting with theaters, producers, etc? Those movies would have made more money going straight to Netflix. Teenage girls have Beauty and the Beast in two weeks. Religious folks have The Case for Christ on a less crowded weekend. You're not gonna target every demographic every weekend. Most people don't go to the theater every weekend.

The Christian crowd and teenage girls already have a movie in theaters for them- La La Land.

If Hollywood wants to start showing movies that are actually worth seeing earlier in the year, I'm fine with that.

Beauty and the Beast opened to $170 million. These are just estimates. Could be higher. Could be lower. Either way, it's fucking March. They should just put Mickey Mouse on the one dollar bill. The Disney money making train keeps on rolling.
Opening on Friday

Disney is responsible for 6 of the top seven opening weekends of all time. Universal's Jurrasic World is the odd one out.

Final numbers are.
Beauty and the Beast grossed $174.7 million domestically and $357 million worldwide in only 3 days of release. Our first billion dollar grosser of 2017? Time will tell. No major competition for at least 3 weeks when Fast & Furious 8 opens.

China strikes back! Its been a while since China dominated box office news but it returned with a fury. Kong: Skull Island opened to $70 million in China. That brings its international total to $300+ million. Interestingly, that isn't the biggest opening for an American film this year or the only noteworthy one. XxX: The Return of Xander Cage opened to $60 million and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Dracula 's favorite movie of 2017, opened to $94.3 million. Logan and Beauty and the Beast opened to $48.8 million and $44.5 million. China feels like early 2000's America when movies like Mission: Impossible 2 and The Mummy Returns dominated the box office. They should be hitting their Spider-Man / Pirates of the Caribbean phase in a year or two.

The theory is that movies like the original XXX and The Fast and The Furious just happen to have come out right at the time when Hollywood movies were first being allowed into certain key foreign markets and as such the audiences have disproportionate nostalgia for them because they hadn't seen anything like them at the time. It's like how American anime fans think Ghost in the Shell is this landmark of the genre when the Japanese just see it as another of many kind of popular sci-fi anime.
