Remember when summer started in May... and then April... and then March? Now it's fucking February. Fanible , I know you're making mad money these days, but Jesus H. Christ, are movie buffs ever gonna get a break from annoying crowds? The top three movies this weekend were The LEGO Batman Movie with $55 million, Fifty Shades Darker with $46 million and John Wick 2 with $30 million. A total of $131 million. 15+ million people making a line at concession, talking & texting during the movie and masturbating to Christian Grey & Dakota Johnson and Will Arnett's sexy voice. Stop the madness, Hollywood. It's February. You're supposed to be releasing crappy romantic comedies and maybe a decent horror film. Opening on Friday are A Cure for Wellness, Fist Fight and The Great Wall. My partner and I got to the theater last night when things were relatively calm. A few minutes later, shit was packed and the line stretched to the entrance. You can't go to the theater anymore. Just stay home and Netflix. |

The Lego Batman Movie grossed $42.5 million this President's Day weekend. Grand total so far is $107 million. Fifty Shades made $23.2 million for $91 million total.
Opening this weekend: Collide, Get Out and Rock Dog. Don't worry. Logan comes out the week after that.

Damn. I was really hoping 50 Shades Darker would under perform to the point of losing money. I'll just have to settle for the consolation that the sequel isn't doing anywhere near as well as the first one. That thing was riding mostly on people's curiosity.

Meh. 50 Shades is a pretty easy phenomenon to avoid and I don't think Hollywood is going to be making too many copycats no matter how much those things make. |

Now that the Oscars are behind us, let's focus on the present. Get Out was #1 at the box office this weekend with $33.3 million. The low-budget horror-comedy has a 99% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. The Lego Batman Movie surpassed Split, M. Night Shyamalan's acclaimed thriller, to become the highest grossing film of 2017 thus far with $133 million. Split has made $130 million. Fifty Shades Darker isn't far behind with $103 million. Lots of 3's.
Opening this weekend is the long awaited Logan. It's an R-rated X-Men movie featuring the last performances of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart as Wolverine and Professor Charles Xavier. They've been playing the roles for 17 years. Jackman currently holds the record for most appearances as a superhero. He's been in 9 X-Men films with 7 of those as a lead or co-lead role. Robert Downey Jr is expected to surpass him soon. He's played Iron Man 7 times and has 2 more on the way and possibly more in the future. Although the comedy heavy Deadpool did exceptionally well for an R rated movie, it's too soon to tell if the more serious Logan will share the same fate. The reviews are good at least and it will make money.
The films dumb enough to open opposite Logan include Before I Fall and The Shack. Studios know Netflix is a thing, right?

Do we do opening weekend predictions? I'll go $70 million for Logan. It's tracking at $60 million. Based on reviews and word-of-mouth it could do $70-75 million. The question is how much the R-rating will hurt it. Deadpool overcame it cause it was a mass appeal comedy. This movie is more for the fans. |

Final numbers are in. Logan opened to $88.4 million. Not exactly Deadpool but on par with other X-Men movies. Get Out held up quite well with $28.2 million. Its 2-week total is $78 million. Opening on Friday: Kong Skull Island.
