"What about China," shouts Wyldstaar Warner Bros will make more from slutty girls dressing as Harley Quinn for Halloween then they'll make from any movie this year. Why do you think Disney only makes merchandise friendly movies? That's where the real money is. I agree completely that WB will profit nicely from the merch rights to Harley even more than usual, thanks to this movie. The IP holder can usually make out like a bandit selling merch if they play their cards right. Not everyone gets to reap the profits from t-shirts and costumes, though. After all, the #1 rule in Hollywood is "Never make a film with your own money." WB didn't pay for Suicide Squad entirely out of their own coffers. They convinced two film financing companies- Atlas Entertainment & RatPac-Dune Entertainment, to help pay for the film. Those two are getting their profits solely from the box office. Don't get me wrong, though. It's not as if I feel sorry for them. They were the ones stupid enough to invest in a WB/DC movie, despite the terrible track record.

I'm interested in Sausage Party, but doubt I'll be seeing it in theaters unless a friend really wants to go. Real question is: how massive of a dropoff will Suicide Squad have next weekend? If Star Trek's drop was as big as it was, this should be way crazier. Don't know how it will compare to Star Trek's drop but it will probably be less than BvS's drop. BvS's drop was the result of it being indisputably messy and lame whereas the quality or lack thereof of Suicide Squad is more of a matter of taste. There is a target audience for SS that will probably spread good word of mouth. That's true, Suicide Squad does seem to have its supporters whereas BvS... not really much you can defend there. Still, people that wanted to see it have seen it, and people on the fence are probably having a difficult time relying on either critic reviews or positive word from friends to figure out if they want to see it. Fortunately, this has been a crap summer for film (crap year really) and Sausage Party and Pete's Dragon won't cut into its second week profits anyways. We'll see, this film's supporters appear to be personally pissed at critics this time around and might want to see it again to show support. Which I think is dumb because critics could care less and Warner Bros. isn't hurting for cash, but do what makes you happy I suppose.

Make no mistake, it's going to get at least a 50% drop, but most movies get a 50% drop when they have huge weekends like that. I'm kind of surprised people made such a big deal about it happening to Star Trek. I don't know that anyone is crazy enough to go out of their way to see a movie just to spite critics. People like to vent on the internet about "supporting" movies but there are really no people who are going to go see things on principal like that, at least not in large enough numbers to move the needle at all.

Heh, yeah you're probably right. I see people on the internet write things like "just watched the film for the 3rd time" and I can't help but think that's crap. Maybe they just post it thinking it validates their opinion more. Comic book fans are a different breed though, and they take these movies far more personally than any Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. fans that I know of. Like you said, that big drop will happen. But I can certainly see people being more interested in seeing Suicide Squad a 2nd time as opposed to BvS, which had a massive drop because, well, who the hell wants to pay to see that crap twice?
Personally, I need to see Jason Bourne still, so I'm gonna see that soon in a near empty theater instead.

Doomsday saw it like 10 times.

Blade Runner 2... if it's awesome that could change.

My record for the most times I saw one movie in a theater is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: 9 times.

When was the last time one of these biblical epics was a success at the box office? On top of that, Ben Hur was a needless remake. It deserves to bomb. I can't imagine the foreign market being much help, either.

I don't think neither the Studio or audiences ever thought Ben-Hur would make money... It will do good in DVD as I heard.

I don't think neither the Studio or audiences ever thought Ben-Hur would make money... It will do good in DVD as I heard. That thing cost $100 million to produce. God knows what they paid in marketing. With the home video market in the poor state it's in today, there's no way it's going to even make it into the black, much less become profitable. I'd be surprised if Paramount manages to make back all the money spent on advertising, much less the production budget. Summer movie season is essentially over now, I suppose. Ben-Hur was the last blockbuster of the month. This has been one of the most disappointing summer movies seasons in a long time for me. Things don't look to pick up again until November, with Doctor Strange, Arrival, Fantastic Beasts and Moana all coming out.

There were no great movies this summer. Even the adult alternatives like Nice Guys, Infiltrator and War Dogs weren't exactly A+. But there was nothing I hated either.

I don't know that I saw a single trailer or advertisement for Ben-Hur. It's like they realized half way through production that no one wanted a Ben-Hur remake and then decided not to waste any money marketing it.

They could have totally advertised it to religious groups. From what I hear, it's closer to the book and Jesus has a bigger role. That's why FShuttari said this will be a success on DVD.

Pretty much faith movies do really well on Home Video... Just look at the "Risen" and "Mircales from Heaven" it did decent after it left theatres.
