Nope, all the Shrek movies opened the weekends before Memorial Day in their respective years, so Shrek The Third counts.

20 years ago, Independence Day ruled the box office. Now? Not so much.
The #1 movie at the box office this weekend is, once again, Finding Dory. It grossed $73.2 million and has made $286.5 million in just two weeks of release. Independence Day: Resurgence had to settle for $41.6 million.
Opening on 4th of July weekend is The BFG, The Legend of Tarzan and The Purge: Election Year.

Happy 4th of July.
The #1 movie is, no surprise, Finding Dory with $50.1 million. It's 3-week total is $380.5 million. At #2 is, wait for it, Tarzan with $45.5 million. I bet no one saw that one coming. The Purge 3 is #3 with $34.7 million. And at #4, and flopping, is The BFG with $22.2 million. When was the last time a Spielberg movie flopped?
Opening on Friday is Mike & Dave and Secret Life of Pets.

The year is half over, and four of the top five films of the year at the box office belong to Disney. Moana and Rogue One have an excellent shot to be somewhere in the top ten. Pete's Dragon and Doctor Strange probably won't crack the top ten, but you never can tell. Regardless, it looks like another year with Disney as the top studio, thanks in large part to their purchase of Marvel and Lucasfilm.

The #1 movie this weekend is The Secret Life of Pets with $103.1 million. Finding Dory, meanwhile, has reached $422.5 million domestically. It's the #1 movie of 2016 so far and will probably stay there until December when Star Wars: Rogue One is released. That is assuming Rogue One will be a monster hit. If not, congrats Dory, you're #1. Opening on Thursday night is the long awaited Ghostbusters reboot starring... women. Doomsday and SnoBorderZero , have you guys pre-ordered your tickets?

I love how Will Smith has taken a way back seat to Jared Leto and Margot Robbie for this movie.

I love how Will Smith has taken a way back seat to Jared Leto and Margot Robbie for this movie. And yet, he's the one doing the most to promote the movie.

I love how Will Smith has taken a way back seat to Jared Leto and Margot Robbie for this movie. Considering how long it's been since Smith had a hit movie, it was time to eat some humble pie and take on a project that wasn't focused entirely on him the way he prefers.

Ironic, since his Deadshot is basically the lead character of the movie (with the exception of maybe Harley Quinn).

Suicide Squad's box office success is primarily coming from theatres in African-American & Latino communities, similar to the Fast & Furious series.

Final numbers are in. Suicide Squad grossed $133 million this past weekend. Not quite the $140 million it was projected to make before the terrible critic reviews, but with a $175 million budget and millions already made from Harley Quinn merchandise, Warner Bros ain't got nothing to worry about. "What about China," shouts WyldstaarWarner Bros will make more from slutty girls dressing as Harley Quinn for Halloween then they'll make from any movie this year. Why do you think Disney only makes merchandise friendly movies? That's where the real money is. Opening on Friday is the R-rated animated comedy from Seth Rogen & Friends, Sausage Party. Doomsday SnoBorderZero let's take a bet on how many parents will be stupid enough to take their kids to this movie. Also opening on Friday is Disney's remake of Pete's Dragon. They haven't aggressively marketed this movie, so it'll probably be another BFG.

I was talking with my mom last week who said 'Have you heard of this Sausage Party movie? I saw it's rated R, is that right?' She saw that it was a cartoon and thought it would be safe to take my niece and nephew. I told her about it....but I shouldn't have.

I'm hearing/reading it's a lot more graphic than the trailers indicate. Definitely don't take the kids.

I'm interested in Sausage Party, but doubt I'll be seeing it in theaters unless a friend really wants to go.
Real question is: how massive of a dropoff will Suicide Squad have next weekend? If Star Trek's drop was as big as it was, this should be way crazier.

Sausage Party is currently 9 for 9 on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty shocking. There's no way in hell it's saying that way but there are some legit publications in there like Variety and Hollywood Reporter.

If Star Trek's drop was as big as it was, this should be way crazier. Don't know how it will compare to Star Trek's drop but it will probably be less than BvS's drop. BvS's drop was the result of it being indisputably messy and lame whereas the quality or lack thereof of Suicide Squad is more of a matter of taste. There is a target audience for SS that will probably spread good word of mouth.
