The studios are cranking out so many crappy movies these days that January and February can't contain them all, and September is the new dumping ground. At least Black Mass looks interesting. It's nothing new, September almost always sucks and more often than not August is pretty lame too.

It looks as though an Ant-Man sequel is likely to happen. The lowest grossing Marvel Studios film to get a sequel so far is Captain America: The First Avenger. Ant-Man has made more money than Cap as of this weekend, and it hasn't even opened in China and Japan yet.

Yes, but the contracts for many of the core Avengers are about to expire, and Marvel Studios needs new blood. They also need to diversify their franchises, and Ant-Man is a very different character from the other Avengers. If we're lucky, an Ant-Man sequel will live up to the potential that the first film squandered.

I don't know, I see him being something more akin to the hulk: one movie as an origin story then make him sort of a presence in the Avengers movies and leave it at that. Frankly, I don't think Marvel is very happy with this movie at all and probably think they "got away with one" and that they view whatever money this did make as just a baseline of what anything in the Marvel Studios brand that isn't Fantastic Four is going to make at this point.

Frankly, I don't think Marvel is very happy with this movie at all and probably think they "got away with one" and that they view whatever money this did make as just a baseline of what anything in the Marvel Studios brand that isn't Fantastic Four is going to make at this point. Marvel Studios would actually like to make another Hulk movie. The official reason they give for not doing so is that they don't think he works outside of a team. Recently it's come to light that the real reason no new Hulk solo projects are on the way is that Disney doesn't own the distribution rights to any Hulk solo films. Those rights still belong to Universal Pictures, and their distribution contract entitles them to the lion's share of the profits. Back when Marvel Studios was a stand alone production company, that was a typical deal. Now that Disney owns Marvel however, such an arrangement is considered unacceptable. I'm sure that Marvel Studios isn't entirely happy with the under performance of Ant-Man, but it's not exactly unexpected. It had the lowest budget of any MCU movie so far for a reason. Still, every Marvel Studios sequel to a solo film has significantly outperformed the original at the box office.

M. Night is back. Sort of.
The Visit grossed $25.6 million this weekend. It only cost $5 million to make - so yeah - it made a profit. Or will in the long run.
But it wasn't the #1 movie. That honor goes to the urban sex thriller, The Perfect Guy. It grossed $26.7 million.
These are just estimates right now. We'll have the final number on Monday afternoon.
Opening on Friday is BLACK MASS, The Maze Runner 2 and Kate Mara's Captive.

That will mark six straight weeks where movies with African-American protagonists will have been number 1 at the box office, which is cool, prepare for the think pieces.

The #1 movie this weekend is Maze Runner 2 with $30.3 million. Black Mass is #2 with $23.3 million. M. Night's The Visit has grossed $42.3 million in two weeks. It cost $5 million to make.
Opening on Friday is The Green Inferno, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Robert De Niro's The Intern. Also be on the look out for Sicario, which is in a limited release.

It has been a bad month for SnoBorderZero . First, M. Night has a career resurrection with The Visit. And now, Adam Sandler rebounds from his recent flops. Hotel Transylvania 2, which Sandler co-wrote and stars in, opened at #1 this weekend with $47.5 million. That's what you get for not having a major kids movie in theaters since the Minions. Opening on Friday is the long awaited Ridley Scott movie, The Martian.

SnoBorderZero , I have good news and bad news. The good news is that The Martian opened to $55 million. The bad news is that Adam Sandler's Hotel Transylvania 2 grossed $33 million in its 2nd weekend. It has now grossed a total of $90.5 million. But don't feel too bad. Sicario was #3 at the box office this weekend. It has grossed $15 million is 3 weeks of release. It only cost $30 million to make. Opening next weekend is "Peter Pan Begins" and Robert Zemeckis' The Walk. Also, Steve Jobs opens in New York and Los Angeles. So, Doomsday , check it out and let us know what you think.

You bet I will, looks great.
I was going to see The Martian last night but the Aero in Santa Monica was playing the Amadeus Director's Cut so I caught that instead.

It's kind of annoying that Steve Jobs is getting a limited release for two weeks. Why wouldn't they just wide release the film right away? It's going to be a hit I'm sure so why waste time testing the waters.
