Waitaminute, you're just going to pick a Criterion movie without running it by us first? There are like 50 other ones I would have recommended before Diabolique. Bad form, NE, bad form.

THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORY10 years ago, @dukeleto 's all-time favorite movie, The Dukes of Hazard, opened at #1 with a respectable $30.6 million. 15 years ago, Hollow Man, Space Cowboys and Coyote Ugly, otherwise known as Deexan 's favorite movies, were released. They all did okay considering their low-budgets. Although, since Space Cowboys is the only time you'll ever hear *NSYNC in a Clint Eastwood movie, it probably should have done better. The fans didn't show up for that one. 30 years ago, Weird Science and Fright Night were unleashed to the public. What a weekend! Ain't that right, SnoBorderZero ? I'm not sure if either movie were really a box office hit. Back to the Future was still dominating the box office and European Vacation had been released the previous weekend and still doing well. Weird Science and Fright Night probably became popular on television.

Fright Night is one of my favorites. Jerry Dandridge was the best vampire ever.
RIP Jerry

Fright Night and Weird Science on the same weekend? How did teens even choose? Weird Science is the type of movie you watch with your friends cause it has silly humor and a hot girl in it. Fright Night is a horror movie and that's typically a date night movie. So I guess they chose depending if they were single or not. Fright Night is one of my favorites. The criminally unseen Fright Night II is much better.

Hopefully Fantastic Four's underwhelming box-office discourages Fox from that crossover with X-Men.

Never really cared for either of those. I dug Pee Wee a little, more the TV show than the movies but I was never a huge fan.
Couldn't care less about Dangerous Minds. Samuel L Jackson did it better in 187.

This week in box office history
10 years ago, Judd Apatow began his dominance with The 40 Year Old Virgin. It opened at #1 and went on to gross $109.4 million domestically.
20 years ago, Mortal Kombat opened at #1 with $23.2 million. That's $43.4 million when adjusted for inflation. The movie, in total, grossed a modern equivalent of $131.5 million.

China is the likely tipping point between whether or not a sequel happens, but I'm not so sure they'll be enough. US movie studios only get 25% of the box office in China, so that $26.6 million gets whittled away to only $6.65 million by the time Paramount Pictures gets their hands on it. It will depend on how much staying power T5 has there.

Leave it to China to eat up the crap we don't like. The movie BOMBED here even with the PG-13 rating (which I argue actually hurt it, no teens care about Terminator or Arnold anyways) and yet it's done great overseas which will likely allow them to move ahead with making the next film. They're probably just gonna set it in Hong Kong this time around and go all in on China.

And the Avengers 2 has grossed $240 million in China. Terminator 5 should gross $150-200 million in China. Maybe more. They rescued the franchise.
