HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO JAWSAs Doomsday and Dracula continue to cringe at the ongoing success of Jurassic World, it's amusing to think that the same studio and person behind the movie created the summer blockbuster 40 years ago. You often hear or read that Jaws was the first blockbuster. That isn't true. Blockbusters have existed since the dawn of cinema. What Jaws did differently was to debut nationwide. Before Jaws, studios opened movies in key cities, and based on their success, would either give it a respectable countrywide release or dump it at drive-ins and bargain theaters. Jaws added risk to Hollywood. It is expensive to market and distribute movies and so began the ongoing business model of playing it safe. Every now and then, Hollywood will take a MAJOR gamble but it's more common for them to rely on a proven formula. You can either thank or blame Jaws for this - or maybe both. But I think there's a bigger subject we're overlooking here: Steven Spielberg. That's right, Jibbs , as the kids on the Internet say, "your favorite is problematic." Spielberg didn't accidentally create modern day Hollywood. He has embraced it. The fact that his name and company (Amblin) are attached to Jurassic World says everything you need to know. I'm NOT making him the enemy, IanTheCool . I'm just giving ya'll food for thought.

Jaws is awesome. Seeing it on the big screen for the first time this fall.
Apparently in Austin they show it at like a water park and you watch it in the lazy river or something like that.

It's part of the Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow. They even did it at Martha's Vinyard once. JAWS ON THE WATER takes place June 27th and July 11th at the Texas Ski Ranch, an extreme sports destination midway between Austin and San Antonio off of I-35 that boasts two manmade lakes, including one with a sandy beach (the perfect vantage point for anyone who still doesn't think it's safe to get back in the water).

Don't you hate Jaws? Maybe if they screened Orca you'd be the first one there.

I remember seeing Batman Forever and having it quickly become my all time favorite movie until I watched Batman again a few days later. I was on a Jim Carrey high when Batman Forever was released. It came out after Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb & Dumber and before Ace Ventura 2, The Cable Guy, Liar Liar, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Me Myself & Irene. I think The Grinch broke the Jim Carrey spell. So for about 5 years Batman Forever was probably my favorite Batman movie. I watched all three movies as often as I could so it's difficult to say for sure. And I know that sounds stupid in 2015 but you were alive in 1995. You too were caught up in the Jim Carrey momentum and loved stuff like this: I watched The Mask again the other night. The character's a lot creepier then I remember, but that was classic Jim Carrey.

This means that domestically three movies (Fast7, Avengers, and JP) have already outgrossed last year's top grosser (American Sniper).

THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORYHas it been 10 years since Lindsay Lohan's boobs were SO BIG that Disney had to digitally shrink them for Herbie: Fully Loaded? Yes. Yes it has. And here's the part where Jibbs mentions Emma Watson and Harry Potter. But if you think that's funny, have you seen Jim Carrey's seminal classic, Me Myself and Irene? It's AWESOME. And today, June 23rd, is the 15th anniversary. I know thebtskink is celebrating. Here's Jim Carrey trying to kill a cow: Today is also the 20th anniversary of Pocahontas, the last Disney movie Doomsday watched in theaters. Technically... the Disney Renaissance lasted till Mulan or Tarzan but I think it really ended with Pocahontas. Once Pixar and DreamWorks showed up, the writing was in the wall for Disney. But this is all up for debate. Mel Gibson, by the way, was in Pocahontas in 1995 and Chicken Run in 2000. Both movies were released on June 23rd. Great timing. Speaking of debates, yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Robocop 2. That movie is either awesome or horrible, depending on who you ask. Personally, I think it's both. There's A LOT to hate about Robocop 2 but it also has its moments. Let's ask Wyldstaar for his opinion. And now for something surprising. PG Cooper , did you know Clint Eastwood's second-to-last western, Pale Rider, was a "summer blockbuster"? 30 years ago, Pale Rider opened at #1 in the box office. It beat Cocoon and Rambo II. It didn't do great box office. It grossed $9.1 million in its opening weekend which is only $20.8 million when adjusted for inflation. But it had decent legs and grossed a modern day equivalent of $94.7 million. That's not too bad when all things are considered. Pale Rider ranked as the 18th highest grossing movie of 1985. For comparison sake, True Grit was #13 for 2010 and Django Unchained was #15 for 2012. Now for the main event. Nilade , are you ready? This week is the 35th anniversary of Airplane!, The Blues Brothers, The Blue Lagoon, Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill and... Herbie Goes Bananas. Actually, two of these movies were last week anniversaries but whatever. Airplane! was the 4th highest grossing movie of 1980 and The Blue Lagoon and The Blues Brothers were #9 and #10. All classics!

Eff Pocahontas. How they fell from the peaks of Aladdin and Lion King to that turd is beyond me. It wasn't THAT bad, but it definitely was missing a BIG "it" factor. I remember when it was released everyone was super indifferent towards it. Although it's possible we were still on the HIGH of Batman Forever.
