It was a big enough hit to still be on the 2006 year end chart I'll always associate Kanye West's Graduation album with 2005. 2006 belongs to these guys:

Movie of the Year
Munich History of Violence, A Brokeback Mountain New World, The Downfall Winner: Munich Worst Movie of the YearFantastic Four Ring Two, The Last Days North Country Elektra "Winner": Elektra TV Show of the YearArrested Development (Season 2) Carnivàle (Season 2) Lost (Season 1) The Shield (Season 4) Six Feet Under (Season 5) Winner: Lost Video Game of the YearResident Evil 4 (PS2) God of War (PS2) Doom 3 (PC) Jade Empire (Xbox) Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) Winner: God of War Hit Song of the YearBest of You- Foo FightersThis year's token white nominee would be The Foo Fighters in what is probably their last real career highlight and probably their last crossover hit. It's a fairly forceful rock song that takes it time to build up before sort of exploding into this anthem. Drop It Like It's Hot - Snoop DoggSnoop Dogg had more commercial longevity than a lot of rappers of his generation, possibly because he was never that angry and rapped about things that a new generation of teenagers comes to appreciate every year. This was probably his last huge solo hit courtesy of Pharrell Williams (and the other Neptune) who gave him this odd minimalist beat with tongue clicks. Get Back - LudacrisLudacris is not a rapper with a great range of skills but he can put together some really strong and forceful party singles and this is probably his best. He's in total boss mode here talking about his willingness to wreck a dude for getting in his grill. Some clever rhymes, a killer beat, perfect music for Hollywood executives to dance to. Hate it or Love It - The Game Ft. 50 Cent50 Cent had a number of hits this year of varying degrees of quality. His best work were his collaborations with The Game during their brief alliance. This and "How We Do" (which would have been nominated if I weren't limiting things) were both technically singles off of The Game's album but 50 kind of dominates both tracks. This one is probably the closest that 50 ever got to making a serious track about crime rather than his usual mafioso celebrations and Cool & Dre's beat definitely propels it. Ordinary People - John LegendHis sound seems a bit more ordinary in a post-Adele world, but John Legend was a real breath of fresh air in 2005. This song in particular seemed pretty bold as an R&B single that sounded nothing like a piece of pre-Disco piano balladry about complicated relationships. It's not generally what I go to pop stations to hear, but it's nice to have something on the charts that's all respectable and shit. Winner: Get Back

Best MovieBatman Begins Brokeback Mountain A History of Violence Hustle and Flow Munich Winner: A History of Violence Best VideogameStarting to enter the era where my gaming was a lot less interesting. Star Wars Battlefront II Timesplitters: Future Perfect X-Men Legands II: Rise of Apocalypse Winner: Star Wars Battlefront Best Song"BYOB" by System of a DownSystem of a Down had a great ability to find great commercial success while still maintaining a heavy and unique sound, and while making pretty definitive stands on political issues. This critique of the Iraq War is really strong and provacative, but the song also works on a purely musical level. It's a perfect fusion of the band's musical and intellectual sensibilities; sounding really good while making some great points. "Dirty Diamonds" by Alice CooperCooper's classic period has clearly long past, but the dude has still put out some really rad stuff since. The titular track from Dirty Diamonds is the highlight of the album. Just a real cool song about a heist gone wrong. "Judas Rising" by Judas PriestWhen Angel of Retribution was released, It had been fifteen years since Judas Priest has cut a record with vocalist Rob Halford. In that time, Halford explored some solo projects while the band limped on with Tim "Ripper" Owens doing a serviceable Halford impression. Their reunion albums starts with this track. "Judas Rising" begins with slower, more subdued guitar in the background slowly building, before exploding in epic fashion. What follows is a heavy song full of awesome solos, classic Priest lyrics, and Halford's supreme vocals. The message is clear; Priest is back, and still in top form. "Revenga" by System of a DownI have great affection for this song given that it shares the name of a play I co-wrote and co-directed in high school, but even beyond that personal attachment, this is just an awesome jam. Great energy and a lot of fun to listen to. "She's Like Heroin" by System of a Down2005 was the unfortunately last year System of a Down put out an album, but at least the had the courtesy to give us two that year. This song about addiction isn't exactly the most pleasant, but it's well-realized musically and the vocal work is especially strong. Winner: "Judas Rising" by Judas Priest Best ScoreBatman Begins Brokeback Mountain The Constant Gardiner Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith War of the Worlds Winner: Brokeback Mountain

Drac, nice to see you agree with me with Lost. Yeah, on a strictly objective level I might like some of those other seasons better but Lost was an almost unprecedented TV event, hard to ignore that when declaring a show of the year. Pretty much the last time that happened on network television.

My favorite songs from the Mesmerize/Hypnotize album were probably "Stealing Society" and "Question!". 2005 was probably the last year I spent keeping up with modern rock, after bands got done protesting the war the genre just started to seem really juvenile to me and not in a fun way. Still like the old stuff though.

It hasn't been a good era for rock or metal, particularly in the mainstream.

Thank you! Best Movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Sideways Aviator, The Vera Drake Million Dollar Baby WinnerEternal Sunshine Worst Movie: Van Helsing Polar Express, The Saw Resident Evil: Apocalypse Alien Vs. Predator "Winner": Resident Evil: Apocalypse Best TV Show: Arrested Development (Season 1) Da Ali G Show (Season 2) The Shield (Season 3) The Sopranos (Season 5) The Wire (Season 3) Winner: Arrested Development Best Video Game: Ninja Gaiden Unreal Tournament 2004 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Half-Life 2 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Winner: Metal Gear Solid 3 Best Hit Song: Dirt Off Your Shoulder by Jay-ZThe ultimate "fuck the haters I'm awesome" anthem, this presidentially endorsed track had Hov rapping over an oddly busy yet minimalist Timbaland beat and it did it over a decade before a certain someone was trying to convince people to shake it off. Hey Ya by Outkast (Andre 3000)The act that owned music in 2004 was Outkast, who released a crazy double album that was actually a pair of solo albums. The biggest most catchiest hit out of the whole project was this Andre 3000 jam that more or less eschewed rap alltogether in favor of a full on peppy pop hit with deceptively downbeat lyrics about ending relationships. The Way You Move by Outkast (Big Boi) ft. Sleepy BrownI'm generally trying to stick to a one song per artist rule in this category to spread the wealth a little bit but I'm making an exception here because these were essentially seperate solo hits from the two group members. Also, I feel like Big Boi has gotten short shrift by pop culture, his flow was arguably superior to his partner's and his first true solo album is seriously under-appreciated. He also proved just as able to make a number one hit as Andre with this cool fusion of rapid rapping and a 70s style soul hook. Burn by UsherThe other artist that owned music in 2004 was Usher, who released his best selling and almost certainly best album Confessions that year. That album spawned a whole bunch of hits that could have been nominated were it not for the one song per artist strategy. Yeah was his big party jam, Confessions Pt. II was his torch song and this breakup song sits somewhere in the middle. This is an almsot timeless feel, it would still be a radio hit if it were released today but it would also fit pretty well in an old school quiet storm rotation and yet it uses (then) modern production doesn't feel like a super retro throwback. All Falls Down by Kanye West ft. Syleena JohnsonThe other other artist that owned music in 2004 was Kanye West, who released his debut album The College Dropout that year. Through the Wire and Slow Jams were the bigger hits but the best of the hit (and it apparantly was a hit according to Billboard) was this song with one of his patented soul hooks interpolated from a Lauryn Hill song. This was back when West (sometimes awkwardly) came off as more of a conscious alt rapper and this was pretty unusual for a mainstream artist at the time. At this point I kind of miss the old Kanye who didn't seem like a complete nut and who you could still kind of defend. Winner Burn

Best FilmThe Aviator Before Sunset Collateral Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Incredibles Winner: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Best VideogameGrand Theft Auto: San Andreas Half Life 2 Halo 2 Winner: Half Life 2 Best Song"Duality" by SlipknotFor better or worse, Slipknot became the face of mainstream Heavy Metal in the 2000s. They were an unambiguously heavy band with a raw sound is this song is a pretty good representation of their music at it's best. Heavy riffs and violent lyrics go together pretty well. "Laid to Rest" by Lamb of GodI've never got as much out of Lamb of God as others in the metal community, but this song is pretty rad. The opening guitar work and the low vocals in particular sounds great. "The Quiet Place" by In FlamesThe 2000s saw In Flames increasingly mix more modern electric elements while maintaining their heavy routes. It's a move not all fans have been on board with, but for me, the band kept their high standards (at least until lately). This song, which depicts someone struggling with external pressures and finding solace in their own thoughts, is a highlight of their post-Clayman discography. It's a well-structured with some great instrumental work and proves pretty cathartic. Winner: "The Quiet Place" by In Flames Best ScoreEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Howl's Moving Castle The Incredibles Kill Bill Volume Two Saw Winner: Howl's Moving Castle

Best MovieCity of God Mystic River Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King, The Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring Winner: City of God Worst MovieFinal Destination 2 2 Fast 2 Furious Out of Time Dogville Anatomy 2 "Winner": Anatomy 2 Best TV ShowThe Shield (Season 2) Carnivale (Season 1) The Wire (Season 2) Farscape (Season 4) The West Wing (Season 4) Winner: The Wire Best Video GameStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne Call of Duty Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Manhunt Winner: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Best Hit SongIn da Club by 50 Cent50 Cent dominated the charts in 2003 with his debut album Get Rich of Die Trying and 21 Questions and P.I.M.P. were also strong candidates to be nominees but the obvious choice was his original hit single that benefited from a world conquering booming beat that instantly conjures images of being allowed in the side door and getting bottle service. 50 Cent is far from being the smartest or most lyrical rapper but there's something so charmingly sleazy about the guy. He's someone who will never show the slightest sign of weakness making him one of the ultimate dudes you wanted to live vicariously through. Clocks by ColdplayIt's cool to hate this band, but what can I say, I think they sound good. This song in particularly is a real earworm with that piano hook and its generally soothing qualities. I haven't the slightest clue what it's supposed to be about, but so be it. Superman by EminemBillboard says this song was a hit, so it's elligible for this award but I certainly don't remember it being on the radio at all in 2003, nonetheless it was always a standout track from his Eminem Show album. That baseline is really infectious and this story he tells about telling off this ho he picks up at a club is vintage dark Eminem shock rapping. Ignition Remix by R. KellyNot to spoil my winner here, but "Ignition Remix" is quite possibly the greatest work of popular music to be released in my lifetime. Damn near every element of it is wildly catchy and nearly perfect. It's lyrics about letting loose on the weekend is immediately relatable and its talk about Cristal popping in the stretch navigator are intoxicatingly fun sounding. Kelly's voice is smooth and the wording of his chorus is insanely catchy. Get Busy by Sean PaulDancehall reggae never really caught on in America and the one hitmaker of the form that was able to crossover was this guy named Sean Paul who certainly wasn't the most repected Dancehall artist but his sound was unique on American airwaves. His biggest hit, Get Busy, is this catchy little earworm that could light up a dance-floor with activity. Winner: Ignition Remix

Oh I was thinking city of God was 2002. Foreign films can be difficult to place. It was released in Brazil in 2002 and in America in 2003. It was the year it was eligible of Oscars anyway.

Best MovieMinority Report Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, The 25th Hour Pianist, The Signs Winner: Minority Report
Worst MovieJason X Equilibrium Bad Company I Spy XXX Winner: I Spy Best TV ShowThe Shield (Season 1) Six Feet Under (Season 2) The Sopranos (Season 4) The West Wing (Season 3) The Wire (Season 1) Winner: The Wire Best Video GameFreedom Force (PC) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (PC) Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (PC) Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (Xbox) Winner: Hitman 2 Best Hit SongA Thousand Miles by Vanessa CarltonAdult Contemporary piano ballads generally aren't really my thing but I've always had a soft spot for this one for some reason. I'm not exactly sure why. It probably isn't because of the lyrics, which rarely rise above typical love song cliches. It might be the arrangement, which is simple and peppy but incorporates strings at just the right moments. It also might just be Carlton's vocal style, which is confident but passionate and kind of playful. Somehow someway it all lined up to something I really enjoy. Lose Yourself by EminemThis one probably doesn't need much explanation. Oscar winning song, great hook, lyrics that have crossover appeal without feeling like a sellout, guitar and piano elements that make it accessible even to people who don't generally like rap. A classic. The Middle by Jimmy Eat WorldI understand that longtime fans of this band absolutely hate this song and see it as a total sellout, but given that it's the only song of theirs I've ever heard that doesn't concern me. Listening to it now the lyrics about being yourself and not worrying about fitting in seem kind of corny, but what matters to me is that it's this really catchy bit of power pop of the kind we could use a little more of today. Work It by Missy ElliottI would't say I was the world's biggest Missy Elliott fan. She was kind of a one trick pony and a little bit of her went a long way, but when she was at her best she could be really fun and this is probably her pinicle. Working with Timbaland to fill the track with catchy beats and weird sounds, this is a tour-de-force of early 2000s studio trickery that is perhaps most famous for its incorperation of reversed lyrics. The Whole World by Outkast Ft. Killer MikeI've always kind of overlooked this single because it debuted on a premature greatest hits album rather than on one of their regular albums and that might have been a mistake. Listening to it again it is clearly classic Outkast with a really interesting beat that has cool instrumental elements and chorus that manages to sound playful and melancholy at the same time. Also, holy shit, Killer Mike (recently of Run the Jewels fame) is on this. I never realized. Winner: Lose Yourself
