MA has a similar nanny state kinda setup, but it's usually the legislature pulling this crap. I think there was a streak of 5-6 speakers/senate leaders who were on the take of special interests, some indicted.
The most infuriating ones are when they directly overturn referendums from a couple years back. Why even have referendums?

So when the slimy governor of California, someone who's sole interest in California is to help himself get set up for a Presidential run in the future You sound so open minded. If you lived here you'd agree. He was mayor of San Francisco before running for Lt. Governor and that city, well....

You sound so open minded. If you lived here you'd agree. The LA Times says he has a 60% approval ratings, so I'm not so sure about that. He was mayor of San Francisco before running for Lt. Governor and that city, well.... Is becoming the third or fourth most important metropolis in the country despite some housing shortages that are in many ways caused by the sheer number of people who want to live there and has nonetheless been ranked as the most livable city in America...

Naturally a hard left Democrat is going to have a high approval rating in one of the most blue-leaning states in the country. George W. had high approval ratings in Texas when he was governor but I don't think anyone here would go bat for him as a politician.
And that's kind of a rosy picture you're painting of San Francisco. I get it, Republicans use it as an example of failed Democrat policies and you want to defend it but at the end of the day it has one of the highest costs of living in the country that people at the state level are unable and, what's worse, unwilling to address (see previous posts regarding the impossibility of residential development in the state) and combine that with an exploding homeless population that's due in part to local governments being unwilling and unable to enforce laws that would get people off the street. There are things that can be done to solve California's problems (rampant and worsening homeless chief among them, lack of affordable housing is right up there) but the people in charge oftentimes seem to do the opposite like the caps on rental increases that was also just signed into law and will ultimately hurt further development.
And regarding me calling Gavin slimy, I don't like low blows all that much unless it's reserved for people who legitimately come off as slimy people. Like someone who has an affair with the wife of his campaign manager/close friend for example. Like Gavin Newsom did. That's slimy.

Like someone who has an affair with the wife of his campaign manager/close friend for example. Like Gavin Newsom did. That's slimy. The high cost of living in places like San Francisco and New York has very little do do with "democrat policies" and everything to do with supply and demand combind with greed and NIMBYism. Anytime a lot of people want to live somewhere because it's awesome (demand) but the residents refuse to allow additional development (reduced supply) the price is going to go up significantly... which is actually kind of great for the existing property owners who now own something more valuable than they used to. Between that and the people who just refuse to let anything change you've got a recipe for housing shortages and homelessness. New York is slightly less terrible in this regard simply because they have more renters who make up a larger portion of the voting base and the population is less terrified of high rises, but in San Francisco the homeowners have sway so it's the so-called liberal millionaires who very willing to put their principals aside in favor of their home values who run the show. All that having been said, these places are overcrowded for a reason (the demand). If there wasn't a reason to really want to live there no one would be going through all this shit and paying all this money to be a part of it. If you can afford it it's plainly an awesome place in large part because of its long history of socially liberal principles and diversity.

Ohh after a couple days off I just want to get back to talking movies but I do agree with you, it is a case of supply and demand and right now it's pretty clear there's an extreme shortage of supply. A lot of that can be attributed to the myriad regulations, fees, codes etc. that developers need to abide by, many of which aren't found in neighboring states which is why you're currently seeing a big push to develop luxury condos and such rather than apartments especially in my turf of LA. Many of the the apartment developers have fled to Nevada, Arizona and such because the profit incentive to build rental units in California is evaporating.
Here's an example that I read about just last week. California recently set up a 'homeless task force' to go to the major cities and evaluate what can be done and for how much. This task force came to Los Angeles and after adding up all the consulting, environmental surveys, zoning approvals and everything else building in California entails, they found out that each emergency unit that they wanted to construct would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Each. Their immediate solution was to ask to be exempt from several of those regs so they could get the the buildings done cheaper and more quickly. Regs that just aren't found in other states. It's well known that building in California is impossibly expensive and can take years even to get approval to begin, even things like room additions or major renovations. The fact that a state-sponsored board had to point out the problem has put a spotlight on the whole issue that maybe, just maybe, if there was a little bit of deregulation then the people who actually build the low-to-mid income housing that we so desperately need might start coming back.

Many of the the apartment developers have fled to Nevada, Arizona and such because the profit incentive to build rental units in California is evaporating. Hate to break it to you, but California is not so special in all of this and you run into similar problems in most expanding metropolises, including places like Phoenix and Las Vegas. Google just about any semi-popular city and "nimby" and you'll get all sorts of articles about these zoning fights. My city just went through this big endless battle to allow the zoning of four unit buildings in most locations and a ban on parking requirements and it got pretty ugly. These aren't really rooted in liberalism though, they aren't well meaning regulations that are meant to curb the extremes of capitalism that went wrong, they're intentional strategies that are put in place out of a profound if unlabeled conservatism. That's conservatism meaning unwillingness to change. They're refusing to allow low income housing to be built in their neighborhoods because they fear that the "wrong kind of people" would show up or they don't want to "change the nature of the neighborhood." It's a classic case of people who place their property values over their principals. Ever watch the miniseries Show Me a Hero?

I'm good. I live in Anaheim Hills, so there's no danger over here, unless the Disneyland fireworks have a misfire. One of the fires two years ago happened in the eastside of my area, so that was pretty scary, but currently I'm in a safe zone. Thanks for checking!!

No, I'm still here. Wife's been hijacking my computer. We pulled the kids out of daycare and are both working remotely. I work 7am to 4pm, she works 4pm to midnight. I make the supply runs on weekends or my lunch break. We got this!!
