Remember when Jeremy Renner was supposed to take over the franchise... after failing to take over the Bourne franchise.

The gadgets in this movie are fun. Reminds me of James Bond before the dark times. Before the Craigpire.

Objectively, Ghost Protocol is great entertainment, but it’s just a James Bond movie masquerading as a Mission Impossible movie. And yes, the villain is lame.

I think Rogue Nation might be my least favorite of these movies. One of the things I admire about this series is that, plot aside, each installment has its own distinctive feel thanks to the rotating door of high profile directors. Rogue Nation is the first time it feels indistinguishable. I still enjoyed it, I like all of them, but it’s the blandest of the bunch.

Happy 20th anniversary Like Gladiator, I watched it opening weekend. Anyone else? I went opening night. My local theater at the time was cash only and the tickets were those red tear-off ones that you usually use for raffles at school. The sound went out right at the start of the final fight and they wouldn't give us our money back. Still crazy to think how that was 20 years ago, in another 20 years most of us will be in our damn 50s. And we'll still probably be posting on here.

In tribute to Doomsday, I rewatched Gladiator for the 20th anniversary a couple of weeks ago. Then I watched it again last week since my girlfriend had never seen it. I hadn't seen the film since early high school and I'm happy to say the film holds up really well. From Letterboxd: Even when watching the good Pirates of the Caribbean movies (well, movie) I kept thinking "Man, I wish I was watching Gladiator". That franchise clearly took a lot of influence from Ridley Scott's epic. Given the film recently hit 20 years and I hadn't seen it since high school (at the latest), now seemed the best time for a rewatch. Gotta say, I thought this held up beautifully. It certainly helps that this type of adult oriented blockbuster is becoming more and more of a rarity, but seeing large scale Hollywood production value (brought to screen beautifully by Scott) for a story that isn't targeting teenagers is quite the thrill. Not that Gladiator is an especially sophisticated movie. For all the talk of family and coming home, this is a very straight-forward revenge story, but a well-rendered one. Russell Crowe brings old-school movie star bravado to Maximus and Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus is one of the decade's great unsung villains, motivated entirely by insecurity. Add to that the actual set-pieces, which are largely awesome and advance the story, and an amazing score by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard and you've got yourself a real triumph. People seem to view Gladiator as one of the less deserving Best Picture winners of the century, but I don't think that's fair. Personally, I'd rank it above at least a dozen movies that have won since. Moreover, Oscar tends to award populist entertainment over more challenging artistry, and Gladiator is an excellent example of how compelling populist entertainment can be. A

The first Mission: Impossible is so darn good. I know this series will never go back to its De Palma roots, but maybe SnoBorderZero and Eddie Murphy can make Metro 2 and turn that into a spiritual successor.

To be fair, getting through 30 minutes of this movie is pretty tough. It's the sad realization that there's still almost 2 hours to go. If Mission: Impossible 4 had been the last one, this would have been the quirky one. The John Woo silliness is amusing to say the least. But since Christopher McQuarrie took ownership of the franchise, I don't know what to make of this. Is this even a real Mission: Impossible movie anymore? The De Palma one already feels like it belongs to a different series. This feels like it belongs to a different planet. That said, I think it's hilarious that Mission: Impossible 2 and (to some extent) XxX are responsible for Die Another Day. See. That feels like its own trilogy.

The first two films do feel like they're from an entirely different franchise save for the obvious collective threads like the theme song and Tom Cruise. The second one is the Crystal Skull of the family. The Shia LaBeouf that doesn't get invited to Thanksgiving.
