DIAL M FOR MURDER (1954)An old man with a young wife is astonished to learn that she’s cheating on him and so he hires whats-his-face from Dr. No to murder her. Things don’t go as planned, and well, let’s just say the old man should have been grateful that Grace Kelly even paid attention to him. It’s a shame a cheesy title was accompanied by a lame-o movie. Can’t win them all, I guess. To give the film some credit, it's the equivalent of a TV show bottle episode, and Hitchcock kept the pace as steady as he cared to. It’s not a passion project like Rope (or even Rear Window, I guess) but for a paycheck-gig he could have phoned it in a lot more.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959)The 60th anniversary of this movie came and went without a single acknowledgement from our distinguished film professor PG Cooper. There likely isn’t a better representation of Hitchcock Logic than North By Northwest. Cary Grant plays an advertising executive who is mistaken for a government agent named George Kaplan. It’s important to point out that George Kaplan is staying at a hotel under the name George Kaplan, but when Cary Grant is confronted and kidnapped by a couple of goons, he’s having lunch with a few colleagues and all the identification on him has a different name. Are these villains... dumb? Of course they are. After they question Cary Grant and naturally don’t get the answers they seek, they attempt to kill him through an elaborate drunk driving scheme. Why? Just shoot him and dispose of the body. This is the 1950’s. Forensic Files won’t be around for 30 years. You’ll be fine. But you see, for Hitchcock, the plot is just there to take the audience from one set-piece to the other. This isn’t an absolute statement. Sometimes Hitchcock does bother to put real thought into the story and sometimes, like in The Birds, he doesn’t bother at all and stuff just happens. However, the most common scenario is for there to be no real-world logic. Hitchcock is more interested in making the case feel than think. Sometimes it works and sometimes it fails in spectacular fashion. In the case of North By Northwest, you have a movie in which the audience is very aware of the stupidity of it but don’t care because the thrills make up for it. Typically, the dumber a Hitchcock movie is, the worse it is, but this might be the grand exception. After Cary Grant escapes from death, he learns that George Kaplan is a decoy for a spy agency trying to stop James Mason from smuggling a microfilm. What follows is a series of set-pieces that sees Cary Grant running from police, hiding from police, romancing Eva Marie Saint and battling the bad guys on top of Mount Rushmore. Most of it works because Hitchcock delivers the goods and he has a premise simple enough to not disrupt what he’s trying to accomplish. In other films, the characterizations may be off or the casting is off or the story is convoluted or his heart might simply not be in it. Here, none of that is an issue. The story is straightforward. Cary Grant is Cary Grant. Cast is fine. Hitchcock has something to prove after the financial failure of Vertigo. It’s a movie that works in spite of its overt shortcomings.

Film 1: RebeccaI've been somewhat cold on Rebecca in the past for not being very "Hitchcockian". The film isn't really a thriller, there are set-pieces but they aren't the emphasis, and the film lacks Hitchcock's dry wit. This is a lot closer to being a costume drama, albeit one with Gothic trappings and a sinister edge. I agree. Plus, the suicide-by-murder conclusion is really stupid. The new one (coming out this week) is supposed to be ass, but who knows, maybe they grow some balls and fix that part of it. Reportedly, Hitchcock didn't care for the book/script either and wanted to re-write the whole story. But this being his first American film, he had no power.

Currently rewatching Rear Window for the first time in 20 years or so.
Thelma Ritter as the nurse is a delight.

Stage Fright (Alfred Hitchcock, 1950)- 7/10 It’s back on HBO Max if anyone cares. I started watching it and lost interest pretty quickly. Maybe I’ll give it a second chance. The Wrong Man is pretty good. I caught it on TCM. Yes, I still have cable. It’s really good. Maybe great. Might try to rewatch it to dissect it better. Although it’s based on a true story, I thought it was ridiculous until I tracked down the Life magazine article the movie is based on. They weren’t kidding about the true story part. It’s still a ridiculous story, and under a different filmmaker, it might have focused more on police corruption. Rightfully so. But Hitchcock’s take on it is pretty interesting and I enjoyed the performances by Henry Fonda and Vera Miles (of Psycho fame).

Stage Fright is pretty forgettable, definitely third tier Hitchcock. The Wrong Man is great though, it doesn't often make the conversation when talking about high end Hitchcock but it's a very solid watch.

Hitch was born 08/13/99.
Damn. We missed his 25th birthday.
Happy B-Day, Hitch.
